Boy, 14, charged with rape

POLICE have charged a 14-year-old Hobart boy with the rape of a 23-year-old woman at knifepoint on a Cornelian Bay walking track last week.

The woman was walking along the track at 1.20pm on Thursday when she was grabbed from behind by her assailant, who dragged her off the track at knifepoint and raped her before fleeing the scene.

Detectives from Hobart CIB tonight charged the 14-year-old with aggravated assault, rape, aggravated segxwal assault and indecent assault.

Acting Detective Inspector Craig Joel said the arrest was "the culmination of many hours of diligent work by Hobart detectives, and a similar commitment by our government partners including forensic scientists, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions and just as importantly, the health and segxwal assault support workers who supported the victim after the attack."

The boy will be dealt with under the Youth Justice Act.
