Kano State Police Command has arrested suspected armed robbers at a checkpoint in Kano. The command’s Public Relations Officer, Magaji Majiya, an assistant Superintendent of Police, told THE PUNCH that some of the robbers were arrested after robbing an apartment in Dawanau village. Four others that robbed and raped the wife of their victim, Abdullahi Umar, at Rijar Lemo area of the metropolis on December 18, 2011 were also arrested by the police. They are Mansur Haladu, Abdullahi Babandi, popularly called Aljani, Hudu Sule, and Babayo, all males. The PPRO also said that 27-year-old Aminu Sale, known as Labaran, and Jamilu Hassan (30), popularly called Genius were arrested. Majiya said the two collaborated with others still at large to one Sabiu Sale of Dawanau village on February 4, at about 3am in his home. The police spokesman revealed that they were armed with locally made pistols, knives, sticks and other offensive weapons. During the operation, the suspects, he said, made away with money, GSM handsets and other items. He said the suspects were arrested a few hours after their operation at a stop-and-search checkpoint at Dawakin Tofa Local Government area of the state. Majiya explained that during the arrest, they were found with a locally made pistol, house breaking implements, six wrappers, two sharp knives and the sum of N16,000 suspected to be part of the money stolen from their victim. He said the victim of the robbery attack had since identified the stolen items and the suspects during an identification parade. The suspects in an interview owned up to the crime. However, one of them, Aminu Sale denied that the pistol found in their possession was his. He confessed that his friend, named simply as Sunday, who was also arrested by the police owned it. He said he was not an armed robber, but a common thief who stole at an area in the state called Yankura. Sale said, previously, he only engaged in snatching people of their belongings only four times. “I feel remorseful for what I did, and I will go back to my business of groundnut selling,” he said. The PPRO alleged that Haladu conspired with others on December 18, 2011 to break into the house of Umar and raped his wife. Majiya stressed that during the investigation Haladu and Babandi were arrested, adding that they had confessed to have committed the crime. via Punch
