Vice Chancellor of the University of Benin (UNIBEN), Benin City, Edo State, Professor Osayuki Oshodin, escaped assassination on his way to Abuja last week Tuesday.

The attempt on Professor Oshodin's life became public at the sidelines during the conferment of a honorary fellowship award and investiture of the UNIBEN vice chancellor as a patron of the Institute of Entrepreneurs (IOE) on Monday in Benin City.

A source close to Professor Oshodin accused persons he described as detractors of the professor, "who are not happy that he has blocked areas of leakages within the system," of being responsible for the plot to kill him.

The source, who craved anonymity, said the attempt was made on his life by one of the security details attached to the varsity administrator's convoy.

According to him, "the vice chancellor was on his way to Abuja, and two shots came from the escort car behind. The person said it was accidental discharge, but it was not.

"When the VC came down, the chief security detail said this was 'not an accidental discharge.' But the vice chancellor assessed the situation and said it was not an accidental discharge, because the agent could have killed all of us and said it was an robbery attack."

The source further claimed that the attempt on Oshodin's life was the handiwork of people he said were still lamenting the vice chancellor's actions, which, he added, had blocked ways of siphoning the funds of the university.

Professor Oshodin did not expressly confirm the incident, but he gave thanks to God for keeping him alive.

The vice chancellor, who spoke with some journalists at the Senate Building of the institution, said: "I cannot speak on that issue, because it is under investigation. I thank God that I am alive."

Contacted, the Public Relations Officer of the Edo State police command, Etim Bassey, declined comment on the matter.

Earlier, the Executive Secretary, IOE, Rotimi Oladele, described Oshodin as an administrator motivated by innovation, a unique leadership factor which, he added, "drives and kindles entrepreneurship for relevance, impact and development."
