Lagos was virtually shut down recently as the Knights of Saints Mulumba, KSM, of the Catholic Church, Lagos, went to the streets to campaign against anti-life practices of abortion, gay practice, and use of contraceptives among others.

Organised as part of KSM’s pro-life activities, the rally took off from the Catholic Church of the Holy Spirit, Omole Phase 1, to the Saint Leo Catholic Church, Toyin Street, Ikeja, and lasted for over four hours. Elderly men and women in uniformed Ankara attires trooped out in tens and twenties to the streets, singing songs and distributing pamphlets that preached their message of saving lives to the public.

The long walk from Omole Phase 1, to Toyin Street in Ikeja was made more eventful with the excitement and energy displayed by the knights. And as they sang and campaigned along the road, curious members of the public watched and marvelled in admiration.
Doctor Iloma Bazuwaye, Supreme physician of the KSM, Lagos, did not mince words when he explained to reporters the need for the society to shun abortion.

“God gave us life and we should all protect it. It is another celebration for the Knights of Saints Mulumba, (KSM) in association with our brothers across the world.
“As a medical doctor, I want to point out that there is no reason for any abortion to take place, even in the case of rape or any other unexpected occurrence. Such excuse is not enough reason for abortion. But in a situation that the health of the person involved is so bad and threatens her life, that may necessitate abortion but even with that it is not a good thing to terminate lives. In a case when the woman is pregnant and is under severe health conditions and you have to direct medical attention to save the life of the mother, without directly killing the baby, but you concentrate more on saving the live of the mother and if for any reason your treatment has a side effect and eventually leads to the termination of the baby, that is acceptable.”

Advising young women on the issue of abortion, he said: “It is better they stay clear of abortion because even if you carry it out successfully, it leaves some complications that affect procreation later on in life,” he said.
Disclosing that pro-life activity is one of the tenets of the KSM, Sir Patrick Ikemefuna, the Lagos metropolitan Grand Knight of the church, also told journalists about the imperative of the rally. “Pro-life promotes all activities that are meant to protect life. It goes against all activities that do not protect life.
