Nigerian remanded for impersonating Ghanaian Chief Justice

     A Nigerian businessman, who impersonated the Ghanaian Chief Justice, Mrs Georgina Theodora Wood, to defraud a Singaporean of $ 50,000 dollars has appeared before a Circuit Court in Accra.

According to the Ghana News Agency, the businessman, Eddy Awala, allegedly convinced the complainant that he would secure him government contract and purchase some gold for him.

Awala pleaded not guilty to defrauding by false pretences.

The court presided over by Ms Audrey Kocuvie Tay remanded him in Police custody to re-appear on April 18.

Assistant Superintendent of police Aidan Dery said the complainant Ben Lekhenia is a Singaporean.

He said sometimes in March, Awala and four others, now at large, lured the complainant into the country and he lodged at La Palm Royale Hotel.

Dery said the accused used the name and pictures of the Chief Justice indicating that she was involved in the business deal, and managed to support same with judicial documents for the alleged business deal.

The prosecution said the complainant became convinced of the business transaction and parted with $50,000 to enable him to secure the contract and purchase gold.

Dery said the alleged business deal did not materialise and the complainant lodged a complaint with the police and Awala was arrested.

Meanwhile, a Nigerian has been arrested by the Ghanaian police for defrauding by false pretences, Daily Graphic reported on Wednesday.

He was said to have in his possession medical items indicating that he was a surgeon at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra.

The suspect had in his possession a Ghana Medical Association ID card bearing the name Dr. Emmanuel Ikechukwu Okorafor, Surgeon, a white clinical coat worn by doctors, with a Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital crest on the front pocket, a stethoscope and other medical gadgets.

In addition, Okorafor had two Ghanaian passports bearing two different Ghanaian names, with his pictures embossed on them.

According to the Deputy Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department of the Ghana Police Service, Assistant Commissioner of Police Mr Vincent Dedjoe said, the suspect was arrested on March 28, following a report made by a worker at the Prestea branch of the Ghana Grid Company, Micheal Quasi.
