In a landmark ruling, an Ikoyi court has ordered that funds recovered from a convicted fraudster be returned to his victim in the United States. The fraudster, Hakeem Olanrewaju, was sentenced to two years imprisonment for identity theft and impersonation.

Justice Nicholas Oweibo of the Federal High Court in Ikoyi delivered the judgment on August 15, 2023, declaring Olanrewaju guilty and mandating that the recovered money be restituted to his U.S. victim. This significant decision underscores the court’s commitment to justice and the protection of victims of cybercrime.

The announcement was made public by Dele Oyewale, the spokesperson for the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), on Saturday, May 18, 2024.

During a handover ceremony on Friday, Michael Wetkas, the acting Director of the Lagos Zonal Command of the EFCC, reiterated the commission's dedication to fighting corruption and cybercrime. “We are delighted to be handing over these proceeds of crime today. The EFCC is willing and always ready to do more,” Wetkas stated, as quoted by Oyewale.

This restitution marks a notable achievement in the EFCC’s ongoing efforts to combat fraud and ensure justice for victims, both locally and internationally. The agency continues to enhance its operations to restore integrity and trust within and beyond Nigeria’s borders.
