The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has apprehended the wife of a suspected pipeline vandal and seized two fabricated guns in Rivers State. This was confirmed in a statement released by NSCDC Public Relations Officer, Babawale Afolabi, on Saturday in Abuja.
According to Afolabi, the arrest followed an intelligence tip-off about pipeline vandals operating in the Idia/Ogburu waterside settlement camp, near a multinational company in the Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni area of Rivers State. The operation was conducted by the Commandant-General’s Special Intelligence Squad (CG's SIS), resulting in the capture of the suspect, while others, including her husband, remain at large.
During interrogation, the suspect admitted that the firearms and other incriminating items found at the scene belonged to her husband, who has been involved in illegal oil activities for the past two years. The seized items include two locally fabricated pistols, a generator, stainless steel saws, thread sealing tapes, spades, shovels, four welding machines, drilling machines, wellhead valves of various sizes, cables, two functioning smartphones, four non-functional phones, and a power bank, among other items.
"The suspect and all exhibits have been handed over to the Intelligence Department of the Rivers Command for further investigation and possible prosecution," Afolabi stated.
The NSCDC spokesperson warned citizens against engaging in activities that constitute economic sabotage. He emphasized that offenders would face the full force of the law and urged the public to engage in legitimate businesses and cooperate with the government.
Afolabi also called on Nigerians to provide credible and timely information to security agencies regarding suspicious activities in their areas. He reiterated the Corps' commitment to protecting all Critical National Assets and Infrastructure at national, state, and local levels to ensure the safety of lives and property.
