Rivers State Police have apprehended a suspect involved in the abduction and gang-rape resulting in the death of a pregnant woman. The police spokesperson, Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed the arrest of the suspect, identified only as Emeka, to Punch newspaper.
The victim, Chigbewejim Steward, a five-month pregnant woman from Abarikpo community in Ahoada East Local Government Area of Rivers State, reportedly had a dispute with Emeka. Following this altercation, Emeka, accompanied by a gang, allegedly broke into her home on February 12, 2023, at midnight, abducted her, and subsequently gang-raped her to death.
Emeka fled the community after committing the crime, evading capture for 15 months. He was finally apprehended recently. The deceased's husband, Lawyer Steward, a cleric, confirmed the arrest to Punch in Port Harcourt and called for justice for his late wife.
Detailing the horrific events, Mr. Steward recounted that Emeka had threatened his wife following their quarrel, stating, “He told my wife that she would see wickedness that day.” The attack occurred at around 1 a.m. when the assailants broke into their home and took his wife away. Her body was discovered hours later near a fishing pond, bearing multiple bruises and signs of severe assault.
"My wife was five months pregnant. Emeka and his gang raped and strangled her to death. The police arrested him on Thursday. I have gone to the station to give my statement. I want the government to intervene so that justice will prevail," Mr. Steward stated.
The police have indicated that the suspect will be transferred to the State Criminal Intelligence and Investigation Department for a thorough investigation and subsequent prosecution.
