The Maroko Police Division in Lekki, under the Lagos State Police Command, has arrested two men, Sunday Babatunde, 29, and David Sammaru, 22, for allegedly vandalizing and stealing street light cables valued at N2,500,000. The incident plunged the residents of Ikate, Lekki into darkness.

The arrest occurred when vigilant residents noticed the suspects tampering with the street light cables and promptly alerted the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of the Maroko division. Responding swiftly, the DPO and his team arrived at the scene, prompting the suspects to flee with the stolen cables. The police pursued and apprehended the men, recovering the stolen property.

Following an investigation led by Inspector Elizabeth Ekanem and her team, the defendants were charged before the Tinubu Magistrate’s Court on Lagos Island. They face two counts of conspiracy to vandalize and steal cables.

She highlighted that the vandalism of the street light cables led to a blackout in the area. The charges against them fall under sections 411 and 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

Both defendants pleaded not guilty. Magistrate Mrs. Gbajumo Ayoku granted them bail of N500,000 each, with two sureties in like sum. She adjourned the case to May 27, 2024, for mention and ordered the defendants to be detained at the Ikoyi correctional facility until they meet their bail conditions.
