A 23-year-old woman identified as Rachel Geoffrey, residing in the Federal Housing Estate, Girei, has been apprehended by the Adamawa State Police Command for allegedly inflicting severe burns on the hands of her stepchildren.

The victims, identified as Genesis Geoffrey, aged seven, and Idadai Geoffrey, aged three, now bear the painful aftermath of the alleged abuse, with their injured hands bandaged as they receive medical attention.

According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, SP Suleiman Nguroje, Rachel stands accused of intentionally subjecting her stepchildren to acts of cruelty and human rights violations.

The incident, which occurred on Tuesday, May 14, sent shockwaves through the community, prompting swift action from law enforcement authorities.

Detailing the sequence of events leading to the horrifying ordeal, Nguroje explained that the children bore the brunt of their stepmother's wrath after innocently consuming a meal meant for their father, sparking a violent reaction from Rachel.

"In a fit of anger, she tied their hands with a handkerchief and set fire to them, resulting in the severe injuries they sustained," Nguroje disclosed, shedding light on the chilling circumstances surrounding the alleged act of cruelty.

As investigations into the matter continue, the community remains gripped by shock and outrage, with calls for justice echoing across Adamawa State. The arrest of Rachel Geoffrey underscores the gravity of the allegations and serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need to safeguard the welfare of vulnerable members of society, particularly innocent children subjected to acts of abuse and neglect.
