Seattle Sounders and Nigeria striker Obafemi Martins impressive start to the 2015 MLS season has been recognised after his brace and assist in Sunday night’s 3-1 win at New York City FC earned him the league’s Player Of The Week Award.
Martins opened the scoring at Yankee Stadium in the 23rd-minute after racing onto the end of Marco Pappa’s throughball to slot past Josh Saunders, before setting up Clint Dempsey to put the visitors back in front just before the hour mark with a tricky move and cross from the left wing.
Martins then sealed the result in the 66th-minute, collecting his strike-partner’s clever backheel chip and racing through the New York defence, before slotting his shot inside the far post to ensure Sigi Schmid’s side took all three points back to the Pacific Northwest.
Martins has now taken sole lead of the league’s scoring charts with six goals from seven games.
