In a collaborative effort involving army troops, sister services, and various security agencies, an Improvised Explosive Devices (IED) specialist associated with the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), has been successfully eliminated in Orsu-Ihitteukwa, Orsu Local Government Area of Imo State.
The joint operation, comprising personnel from the Nigerian Army, Navy, Air Force, Nigerian Police, Department of State Services, and the Nigerian Securities and Civil Defence Corps, was conducted as part of a clearance operation around Udaah, Identa Ihitteukwa, and Awo Idemili in Orsu LGA of Imo State.
Encountering resistance from the dissidents, who engaged the troops with gunfire and hand-held IEDs, the security forces advanced despite the onslaught. During the exchange, one of the dissidents was neutralized while attempting to connect an explosive to its power source.
According to army spokesman, Major General Onyema Nwachukwu, the troops recovered significant materials, including locally made rocket launchers, defused IEDs, pipes, wires, and other components used in the production of explosives. Additionally, several ditches, utilized as obstacles on the roads linking the communities by ESN elements, were uncovered and cleared by the troops.
Assuring continued efforts to thwart the activities of insurgent groups, Major General Nwachukwu affirmed, "The Nigerian Army will continue to conduct its operations to deter the irredentist from freedom of action."
The successful operation underscores the dedication and effectiveness of collaborative efforts among security agencies in maintaining peace and security within the region.
