82  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / A 9 Old Boy Jump Into A Well And drowned on: 6-08-2011 05:03 AM
Michael Bamidele was nine years old last March. He was also a primary five pupil of a public school at the Monatan Area of Ibadan, the Oyo State capital. But today the young boy is no more.

Expectedly, he did not die of natural causes. He drowned in a well he was said to have jumped into. The sad event occurred on Tuesday, 12 July, 2011 at their Aba-Odan area home at Monatan, in Ibadan. The time was 6:30pm. Bamidele was reportedly on his way from church where he had gone to attend the afternoon class. He was said to be close to the house when he suddenly broke into a run, bypassed his own residence and made for an uncovered well at the front of the house behind his and jumped into it.

Whatever had made him consider the well a place he could jump into deserted him immediately he got into the water. He reportedly cried for help as soon as he touched water As if he was on a playing field, According to neighbours he cried for help for some time before he went to the bottom of the well. Reports say that while frantic efforts were being made to rescue the boy from the well, a youth corps member of Igbo extraction allegedly offered to rescue the boy.

The corps member reportedly jumped into the well aiming to rescue the boy. But while in the well, the he claimed to have heard a voice telling him not to dare remove the boy, saying that the boy was their meat. The man alleged that he was told by the voice inside the well that if he forcefully removed the boy, he would be dealt with. By the time the man came out the well, he became partially paralyzed and was rushed to the hospital immediately. But police are currently investigating the cause of the sad incident which, some neighbours claim, is traceable to the threat of a woman, known as Iya Waris, to Bamidele’s mother, Yemisi, a day to the incident.

Yemisi Bamidele and the said Iya Waris used to live in the same compound at Asaaju compound, in the same Monatan, before the former moved out of the house after persistent quarrel with the latter. After the last quarrel that led to Yemisi moving out of the house, Iya Waris was said to have fallen ill. The woman was reported to have told people that Yemisi was responsible for her ailment...

The battle over who succeeds the outgoing President of the Directors Guild of Nigeria (DGN),Mr.Bond Emerua,is hot in Nollywood right now.Emeruwa who succeeded Fidelis Duker,is bowing out after two terms in office.
In the queue to battle for his job, are top award winning directors who are right now wooing members of their guild to garner support in the election which is coming up in a few months time.

Top among the contenders is returnee contestant and former actor of the year,Fred Amata who almost got the position over four years ago,but lost it to Fidelis Duker in controversial circumstances. Fred we hear, has the biggest support among the known four contenders who are in the race right now.

Former AMP Presidential candidate,Teco Benson, is also in the race.Interestingly,Teco’s campaign manager in the acrimonious Association of Movie Producers(AMP) election that returned Paul Obazele for a second term, Dickson Iroegbu, has also thrown his hat in the ring for the DGN top seat.

Veteran director,Mr.Andy Ameneche completes the quartet of those battling to succeed Bond Emeruwa as DGN President.

A 47-year-old man and his daughter have been sentenced for the second time for having sex.

Butler was jailed for 10 months and Yates, 26, was given a 26-week suspended term, at Birmingham Crown Court.
Previously, he was given a four-month suspended sentence, for incest in 2007.
Sentencing the pair for latest offence, judge James Burbidge said : "There appears to have been a relationship that involved genuine affection, but it was also an illicit relationship, a relationship that is regarded as abhorrent to society at large."

90  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Nigeria Ranks 19th on Terrorism Risk Index on: 5-08-2011 09:46 AM
Nigeria occupies nineteenth position on the list of “extreme risk” countries and territories, according to the latest Terrorism Risk Index (TRI) released by Maplecroft.
Maplecroft, a United Kingdom-based risk analysis and mapping firm, has an international team of 75 multidisciplinary experts-including over 50 research analysts.

It provides services used extensively by leading global corporations across all sectors, governments, United Nations agencies and international non-governmental organisations.
It developed TRI to enable business to identify and monitor the risks posed by terrorism to employees and assets in 197 countries.
In the latest TRI released by the firm, 20 countries and territories were rated as “extreme risk,” with Somalia, Pakistan, Iran and Afghanistan topping the list in that order. These top four countries also sustain over 75 per cent of world’s fatalities from terrorism.
Other countries rated as extreme risk include the newly independent South Sudan (5), Yemen (6), Palestinian Occupied Territories (7), DR Congo (Cool, Central African Republic (9), Colombia (10), Algeria (11), Thailand (12), Philippines (13), Russia (14), Sudan (15), Iran (16), Burundi (17), India (18), Nigeria (19) and Israel (20).

Other categories of ranking include high risk, medium risk, low risk, and no data countries.
The UK-based risk advisory company stated on it's website that none of the major Western economies fall within the ‘high’ or ‘extreme risk’ bracket.
It rated as “medium risk”, UK which was ranked 38 because of the deteriorating security conditions in Northern Ireland, while United States was ranked 61 and rated as “low risk.”

The latest TRI also noted that there is a 15 per cent increase in terrorist attacks globally.
The risk advisory firm said the latest index was based on data available to calculate the frequency and lethality of terrorist incidents over the 12 month period prior to April 1, this year.
It also includes a historical component assessing the number of attacks over five years and the risks relating to countries’ geographic proximity to terrorist hotspots.

On Nigeria, it said, “Security conditions in Nigeria remain fragile and a source of concern for investors.”
It cited the activities of the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND), which it said had launched attacks beyond the Delta, in Abuja, the nation’s capital city.

It is, however, important to note that the ranking of Nigeria was based on the data available on terrorist incidents over the 12 month period prior to April 1, this year.
Lately, there had been series of bomb attacks in the northeastern states of Borno and Bauchi, and North-central state of Niger by Boko Haram. Mid-June, the group struck in the heart of the nation’s capital detonating a bomb at the car park of the Nigeria Police headquarters.
91  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / A 25-year-old Nigerian, was sentenced to 70 years in prison in hard labour on: 5-08-2011 09:45 AM
A 25-year-old Nigerian, Amadu Bube, was sentenced to 70 years in prison in hard labour by the Aflao Circuit Court last Friday for robbery
He pleaded not guilty and his accomplices are on the run.
Mr Akwasi Asafo-Agyei, Dzodze District Police Commander, told the court on January 6, a Nigerian registered car travelling from Komenda in the Central Region to Aflao en-route to Nigeria encountered a road block at a spot on the outskirts of Penyi at about 0300 hours.
Mr Asafo-Agyei said eight men emerged from the bush firing shots and ordered the passengers to come out and robbed them of their mobile phones and money. He said just then a police patrol pulled up but the robbers fled with their booty.
Mr Asafo-Agyei said the following day passengers travelling to Aflao from Accra were robbed of their phones and huge sums of cash at the same spot.
He said descriptions by the second driver led to the arrest of Bube at Denu and he was later identified by the driver.
Mr Asafo-Agyei said a phone belonging to one of the passengers on the first car was found during a search in Bube’s room.

92  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / A Nigerian who ingested 67 'drug capsules' dies on flight on: 5-08-2011 09:38 AM
A Nigerian travelling with 67 "drug capsules" in his stomach died due to certain complications on board a flight, which had to make an emergency landing at the city airport on Thursday.
The Doha-Kuala Lumpur flight requested an emergency landing after the deceased, Chika Imaneal (26), started vomiting and fell unconscious.
Medical experts at the airport declared Chika dead on arrival. The airport authority informed the Sahar police about the death, who have registered acase of "accidental death".

The police sent the body for the post-mortem at Cooper Hospital where the doctors recovered the plastic capsules from the stomach.
Vishwas Nagre-Patil, additional commissioner of police (west region), said, "Doctors have sent the recovered capsules for forensic examination to ascertain the contents." The police suspect that Chika was trying to smuggle the capsules.
A source said that Chika could have been died due to poisoning. "In most such cases, capsules burst inside the stomach and the person dies because of poisoning," said a medical expert.

99  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Shamefull!!! No Nigerian univarsity in Africa's top 10 univarsity on: 5-08-2011 04:41 AM
The falling standard of education in Nigeria was again brought to the fore weekend when in a survey published by Webometrics , the ranking Web of World Universities, ranking 2,500 universities surveyed in Africa, no Nigerian University made the Top 10 Africa Universities.
South African-based institutions topped the continental ranking with University of Cape Town taking the lead. This is closely followed by the University of Pretoria, South Africa in second position, next comes Stellenbosch University also in South.
Africa in third position. The University of Witwatersrand, South Africa comes fourth, while University of Kwazulu Natal,South Africa is fifth. The sixth position is occupied by Rhodes University,South Africa. In seventh position is University of the Western Cape, South Africa.

South-Africa dominance is challenged by the Cairo University in Egypt which is eight in ranking. This is closely followed by University of South Africa ,South Africa in nineth position, and Makerere University, Uganda in tenth position.
Of interest is Makerere University which has maintained its 10th position among Africa's best ranked 100 universities, according to the Webometrics survey. It is the only Ugandan university listed in the survey. In the survey, published on Friday, the university improved in world ranking by 146 positions from 1,402th in February to 1,256th.
Other universities in the region are University of Khartoum-Sudan (18th), University of Nairobi-Kenya (26th), University of Dar er Salam -Tanzania (38th), Kenyatta University (58th) and National University of Rwanda at 78th.The rankings, are based on web publications, the visibility of a university on the Internet, the volume of its publications, and the general impact of the information published on its web pages.

Also a ranking by Turkey-based Informatics Institute of the Middle East Technical University, put the 89-year-old Makerere University on the 8th position out of 2,500 universities surveyed in Africa in 2010.
Ms Ritah Namisango, the university public relations officer, attributed the improvement to internal efforts engaged in the recruitment of web administrators for each college who ensure that staff research is uploaded on the website. Ms Ritah Namisango said "We have continued to upload research publications and innovations of staff and students online.
We also have web administrators focused on improving the online visibility and presence of each college." Something urgent has to be done to overhaul Nigeria University system if the products of these Universities will be reckoned with in the world.
