Family suspects foul play in the death of 22-year-old, seeks thorough investigation of incident

HE was 22 years old and a domestic worker in Ogudu GRA, Lagos. Onyeka Kingsley Raphael  was found dead in the swimming of his boss, one Mr. Tunde Williams, on Babatunde Asimi Street, Ogudu GRA.

His death is already raising dust as family members strongly suspect foul play and want police to unravel the mystery behind the death.

The deceased, an indigene of Umunede in Ika Local Council of Delta State, was said to have been found dead last Saturday and his body lying on the floor of the swimming pool with his stomach showing no sign of protrusion, suggesting that he did drown.

An eye witness who saw the body when it was removed from the swimming pool by police men from Ogudu Police Station revealed that there were no injuries either on the head or other parts of the body except a twisted neck, suggesting that he might have been strangled by yet to be identified assailants whose aim remains mysterious until police investigations are concluded.

More so, the police and those who raced to the scene saw the food Onyeka had prepared for himself and placed on the table with his cap.

According to family sources, the young man had gone to live with the Tunde Williams family in March in their Ogudu GRA residence following an arrangement for him to be employed as a domestic worker.

Williams, a retired chartered accountant, is married to two ladies, one of whom reportedly runs a company that produces toiletries.

It was gathered that the relationship between the Williams’ family and Onyeka’s elder sister and brother dates back to a few years ago as all of them were worshipping at St. Andrew’s Anglican Church, Ogudu.

Onyeka’s elder sister, Mrs. Angela Moses, who lost her husband a few years ago, was said to be close to Tunde Williams’ first wife, who happens to be of Igbo extraction while the second wife is Yoruba.

The Igbo wife, according to investigations, lives in the same Ogudu residence with her husband while the Yoruba wife resides in one of their buildings elsewhere.

The deceased, who completed his secondary school education in Warri, Delta State had come to live with his sister, one Mrs. Moses, after the death of her husband and as he searched endlessly for job, an opportunity came for him to work with the Williams pending when he would secure admission to higher institution as he was said to be brilliant.

Though, there is no autopsy report yet, but Onyeka’s family members strongly suspect that his death must have been master-minded by some unseen hands given the manner his boss, Williams, allegedly conducted himself when members of the deceased family rushed to the scene as soon as information got to them about the ugly incident.

It was gathered that when Mrs. Moses and her other relations got to Williams’ residence where the incident occurred, some policemen were already there and asked some questions from the security man who was reportedly at home when the incident occurred.

According to investigation, two men were said to have come in a vehicle to see Williams that same day but were told he was not at home and the men reportedly insisted on going into his office as they were there to do some assignment.

The two men allegedly went in and left after some minutes before the security man discovered that Onyeka was dead in the swimming pool.

While the first wife was said to have travelled outside the country, the second who lives elsewhere, came visiting soon after the incident.

According to sources, efforts of the police to question the security man more about what he knew were frustrated by Williams who was not happy that police men were asking many questions.

Sources at the scene revealed that Williams’ attitude did not give any feeling about the young man’s death as he allegedly brooded over some amount of money, about N50,000 he was said to have given to the deceased to pay for an unknown examination.

Onyeka’s family sources however denied knowledge of any N50,000 given to him and for what examination.

They recalled that last month, there was a misunderstanding between Onyeka and his boss, which almost necessitated the termination of his appointment.

He was said to have opted to leave the job for certain undisclosed reasons, but his elder sister had prevailed on him to endure the situation, as there was nothing for him to do at present.

The Guardian learnt that Williams was virtually angry with the DPO when he insisted that autopsy should be carried out on the deceased. Because the DPO insisted on following the due process and ensuring justice in the matter, Williams was said to be unhappy with him and refused to provide the money for the autopsy.

Lagos State Police spokesman, Ngozi Braide, a Deputy Superintendent of police (DSP) who confirmed the incident said it was ‘a case of suspected murder’.

According to Braide, “A case of suspected murder was reported that one Onyeka, a steward to one Mr. Tunde Williams died in a swimming pool in a mysterious circumstance. The owner of the house, where his body was found is not cooperating with the police. The case will be transferred to State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti, Yaba, Lagos.”

10  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / I ASKED MY GANG TO DEAL WITH MY SISTER -ROBBERY SUSPECT on: 28-10-2012 09:04 PM
What could have prompted a 21-year-old man to send a gang armed robbers, to which he belongs, after his own sister? The reason was revealed by a suspected armed robber, Amuda Lawal Najim, who was recently nabbed by the police in Osun State. OLUWATOYIN MALIK reports.

Just like the blood of Abel cried from the ground when his brother, Cain, killed him, according to a biblical story, so did the the bond between a notorious armed robber, Amuda Lawal Najim and his sister, Mrs Sade Sonibare, cried out in protest early this month when the former led his six-man gang of armed robbers to the sister's resident, but was caught few hours after the robbery operation.

Information gathered by Crime Features had it that Najim (21), in company of Adewale Wasiu (28), Lawal Abiodun (27), Abiodun Emmanuel (25), Wale Osunleye (30) and another gang member popularly called KB, who is currently at large, invaded Igbo-Ile area in Ikirun, Osun State, on Wednesday, October 10 at about 12 midnight and attacked the residents while armed with a dane gun, a cut-to-size double-barrel gun and iron rods.

About seven residents, among whom were Najim's sister, Mrs Sonibare, her husband, Akeem, and an 80-year-old woman, Mrs Olasunkanmi Morufu, were reportedly robbed of a huge sum of money, jewellery and other valuables. Not only that, Najim reportedly instructed his gang members to beat his sister who had just been delivered of a baby, an instruction they carried out, inflicting her with serious injuries. They were said to have also put a knife to her baby's neck, threatening to kill him.

Madam Olasunkanmi was also not spared, as the elderly woman was also thoroughly beaten, after which the armed robbers escaped with their loot. Or so they thought.

Crime Features learnt that immediately the police were alerted to the gang's activities, they went after them. This led to an exchange of fire between the police and the gang, with some of the gang members sustaining gunshot injuries. They, however, escaped into the bush.

After sharing their loot, the gang members were said to have divided themselves into two groups and two of them had walked through hills in the town to link Iree, a nearby town, while others hid in the bush till dawn.

Crime Features gathered that the okada man, who noticed the blood stains on the bodies of the two suspected armed robbers he picked at Iree, became suspicious of their personality . After dropping them at the motor park, the okada man was said to have alerted some people who in turn alerted the police.

The policemen, led by the Divisional Police Officer at Ikirun, immediately swung into action and went ahead of the vehicle to block the road. After stopping the bus, they asked all the passengers to disembark for searching. They noticed the two men who had injuries on their bodies, as well as cash and some jewelry. When questioned, they were said to have lied that they had an accident.

Meanwhile, the other three who also hid in a bush in Ikirun were suspected by the people when they came out from the bush and the Divisional Police Officer at Ila was also alerted. When questioned by the DPO and his men after they were handed over to them, they also lied that they went somewhere and had an accident while on okada.

The five armed robbers, however, opened up when they were transferred to the anti-robbery section of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Osogbo. It was there that Najim confessed to the police that he was the one who led his gang members to his sister's house. He revealed further that he stole N75,000 from his sister in February and ran away. The sum of N1, 144,000, jewellery valued at N120,000, charms and other valuables were also recovered from the suspects.

Narrating how he became a notorious armed robber to Crime Features, Najim said: "When I stole N75,000 from my sister and her husband, I ran away. When I had no where to stay, I left for Ibadan where I met the gang. I joined them for robbery operation and we robbed at Challenge and Ago Taylor areas of Ibadan.

"After following the gang to some operations, they asked me to suggest a 'business' they could do because I had been benefitting from the operations which other people suggested. That was how I remembered that my brother-in-law is a cocoa merchant and he used to handle a lot of cash at home.

"I knew there was no way he would not have money, so I decided to lead my gang to my sister's house. When we got there, I stood outside with a gun while others went in. I also heard that my sister just delivered and held the naming ceremony of the new-born baby before our arrival. I then thought that it was an opportunity to get my pound of flesh back if someone who was not ready to take care of me could be celebrating.

"I asked my gang member to deal with my sister very well. That was why they beat her. They even put a knife on the baby's neck, threatening to kill him. I heard her and her husband begging my gang members not to kill the baby.

"In the Ibadan operations, we usually invaded buildings in the dead of the night to inflict injuries on our victims and rob them of their valuables. We had four guns that we were using for our operations. All the guns were dane guns that we forcibly took from night guards. We usually targetted the night guards so that we could increase the number of weapons in our armoury.

"Immediately we left Ikirun after the operation in my sister's house, we went to Iree town. In Iree town, we mounted an okada and went to the motor park to board a vehicle to Ibadan. We were stopped by the police on the way and searched. When they found a lot of money on me and I could not give them a satisfactory explanation, I was arrested ."

Confirming the story, the Police Public Relations Officer in Osun State, Mrs Folasade Odoro, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, said that the case was still being investigated by the anti-robbery section, adding that efforts were still on to apprehend the sixth suspect who is on the run.

11  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / HUMAN TRAFFICKING/PROSTITUTION, EUROPEAN POLICE AFTER NIGERIAN RING on: 28-10-2012 08:40 PM
THE Hague (AFP) – European police have raided brothels and sex shops across the continent in a bid to identify Nigerian people-trafficking networks luring and trapping women into prostitution, Europol said on Friday.

The operation was led by German police but also saw brothels raided in Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Sweden and Switzerland, said a statement from Europol, which is based in the Hague.

Europol said the aim was to identify people trafficked from west Africa and obtain information on human traffickers.

“More than 468 west Africans, mainly women, were controlled and identified in the countries involved,” the statement said, adding that Police in 12 German states “carried out checks on brothels and similar properties,” the statement said.

“These first European control measures are another important step towards establishing the complex crime structures that are difficult to unravel in the field of trafficking human beings from West Africa,” German federal police commissioner Joerg Ziercke was quoted as saying.

Europol said it was analysing the operation’s results “to help identify key figures in human trafficking in Europe and establish possible criminal organisational structures.”
