A 26-year-old lady,Patience Birus,has narrated how mother luck saved her from the hands of ritualists, who slaughtered another lady, who was a co-passenger, in her presence.


Speaking with journalists in Bauchi, Birus stated that she narrowly escaped being a victim of ritualists on Sunday as the passengers she met in a car she boarded at the Central Market Motor Park in Bauchi to Kangare on the Bauchi-Gombe road in Bauchi Local Government Area of the state turned out to be ritualists.


According to her, "it was on a Sunday after service at about 11.00a.m. My boyfriend, Sunday Noma, took me to the Central Market Motor Park in Bauchi. I was going to Kangare to meet my aunty. I waited beside the car, a black Opel Vectra, when a woman came on a motorcycle. They asked her destination and she said Kangare.


"Five men were sitting in the back of the car. One of them asked us to enter the car. The others said they were travelling too and we all left."


She stated that the car promptly took off from the park and headed for Kangare but instead of stopping at Kangare, which is about 20 kilometres from Bauchi metropolis, the driver of the car refused to stop for the passengers and zoomed off to Bishi.


"The driver kept driving until we passed Kangare and reached Bishi," she said.


According to her, the driver drove them into a bush near Bishi and left them with the men who they were together with in the car, adding that they were joined by another man and they were led into a path.


The men, she stated kept beating them and urging them to walk fast until they reached a spot in the bush where they were ordered to stop.


"We were directed to sit on a rock and asked to make our last call. I called my boyfriend and told him what happened and he shouted. They took the phone from us and collected our money," she said.


She then added that at about 1.00p.m., the ritualists, after debating who among the two women should be killed first, grabbed the other woman, slaughtered her and removed her body parts, including eyes, Bosom s, one after the other.


"I started screaming that I would not die this way and one of the men started laughing,"Birus said.


Asked how she eventually escaped, she stated that her escape was made possible when the man detailed to guard her slept off, adding that she ran in the bush for about five hours before she could reach the main road.


Meanwhile, the Deputy Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Hassan Mohammed Auyo, an Assistant Superintendent of police (ASP), when contacted by journalists, stated that he was unaware of the incident.


He, however, promised to find out about the case and get back to journalists as soon as he got details about it.

The youngster helped her panicking mum with her breathing, encouraging her to push, fetched her clean towels and even made sure the umbilical cord was not wrapped round the baby's head.


Incredibly, Francesca leapt into action after remembering an episode of Casualty when a woman suddenly went into labour.

After 12 minutes pushing, Francesca successfully delivered 6lbs 8oz bouncing baby Roisin (Corr) on July 17 this year.

Dad Michael, 33, missed the drama because he was downstairs on the phone to the emergency services when Kay went into labour.

But when two ambulances arrived, paramedics were stunned to find little Francesca holding her newborn sister after she had carefully wrapped her in a towel.

Proud mum Kay said: "I was so impressed with Francesca.

"She was remarkably cool and collected for a six-year-old. She had gone to bed but woke up when I started screaming.

"She came in and was like 'mummy are you okay?' and said 'I can see the head'.

"She was keeping me calm and telling me where to put my hands and telling me to keep breathing.

"And as soon as she was born she got a towel and it was like she knew what to do, I didn't say anything to her.

"Francesca had her wrapped up and made sure the cord wasn't wrapped around her neck.

"My husband was downstairs on the phone for 12 minutes and a few minutes after she was born two ambulances turned up.

"They were shocked that Francesca was holding her in towels.

"I used to watch One Born Every Minute but I never watched that with Francesca.

"But she watches Casualty and that's the only thing that I can think of. I was really surprised that she knew what to do and was so calm.

"We watched Casualty last week where a lady gave birth with no help and she was like 'that's your story mummy'."

INTENSE pressure has been brought to bear on the Edo State Governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, to spare the lives of two death row prisoners, whose warrants he recently appended his signature.

By implication of the warrant, the lives of Daniel Nsofor and Osayinwinde Agbomien have been handed over to the hangman and they can be sent to the gallows anytime.


Amnesty International, a global human rights group, raised the alarm on Monday that the inmates might have been executed and pleaded with the governor to spare their lives and allow their appeal to go through the judicial process.

Back home, a coalition of human rights groups and lawyers met in Abuja for several hours, Tuesday, brainstorming on how best to convince Oshiomhole to rescind his execution order and give the two condemned men another chance to live.

The crucial meeting, which was convened by lawyers under the auspices of Prison Reforms and Decongestion Initiative, met with officials of the National Human Rights Commission, NHRC, in Abuja and considered options available to save the lives of the two embattled men.

Vanguard gathered that at the meeting, the groups deliberated extensively on the powers of the governors to issue death warrants and came to the conclusion that apart from Lagos State where a court had ruled that it was illegal to kill by hanging and firing squad, other states still had the powers to do so.

Consequently, the group decided to send a letter to the Edo State Governor, pleading with him to temper justice with mercy by withdrawing the execution warrant in respect of the two men already condemned to death.

Additionally, they decided to meet the Attorney General of the Federation, Mohammed Adoke, to intervene and halt the execution of the two men, since Nigeria had an existing moratorium on non-execution of death row prisoners.

LAGOS-TRAGEDY struck, Tuesday, in Ikorodu area of Lagos State, after a man allegedly killed his wife during a scuffle.

The cause of the fight could not be ascertained, but report said the couple had been having incessant quarrels for some time.

Report said there was a shout of help from Mr and Mrs Molade's one room apartment located on 14 Ifesowa Street.

However, no one responded as most of the tenants had reportedly left for their respective places of work. Time was 10am.

Out of curiosity, a passerby was said to have gone to the apartment only to find Mrs Omolere Molade unconscious. The said woman reportedly tried resuscitating Omolere without success.

Policemen from Ikorodu Division drafted to the scene reportedly found Omolere dead.

Spokesman for Lagos State Police Command, Ngozi Braide, who confirmed the story, said Mr. Paul Omolade took to his heels immediately after the fight, adding that effort was being made to arrest him.

..SAO PAULO - A 41-year-old car washer shocked his family when he interrupted a funeral being held for him at his mother's home in the town of Alagoinhas in northeastern Brazil, police said Tuesday.

Police inspector Roberto Lima said by telephone that on Sunday Jose Marcos Araujo identified a body at the city morgue as being that of his brother, Gilberto.

Lima said that Jose Marcos took the body to his mother's home where a wake was held.

"The confusion started when news started circulating that a car washer had been shot dead," Jose Marcos' wife, Ana Paula, told the UOL Internet news portal. "Police called my husband and told him that his brother had been killed and his body was at the morgue."

Lima said the confusion was "understandable."

"The two men closely resembled each other and both worked as car washers," Lima said adding that the man whose body was in the morgue was named Genivaldo Santos Gama. He said further information on Gama was not immediately available.

A few hours before the Monday burial "a friend of Gilberto's saw him walking down the street and told him that his family was mourning him," he said.

"So he went to his mother's home to let everyone know he was very much alive."

When Araujo showed up at his wake "some people fainted and others were so scared they ran away. It was a big shock," family friend Maria Menezes told the G1 online news site.

Gilberto's mother Marina Santana told reporters "I am overjoyed. What mother wouldn't be after being told that her son is dead and then sees him alive."
