14262  Forum / Relationships & Romance / Don't Marry A Man With Potentials – Stella Damasus Advises Ladies on: 19-02-2015 11:13 AM

Nollywood actress, Stella Damasus has called on ladies to be careful when choosing a life partner. She complained about the increasing rate of marriage breakups in the society today.
She warned women to strive to keep their homes and advised them against feeling too relaxed in any relationship because it could be dangerous.
The actress further advised that before a lady should profess her love for a guy, she should first investigate the man’s goals in life and weigh them against hers.
Stella noted that it is not a must for a lady to get married to the wealthiest man. According to her, a lady should date a guy who has something meaningful doing for himself.
In her words, “The one thing that I find that is the most reoccurring thing with women is, o he has potential. The truth is, we think that we just meet a man, we fall in love and we want to marry potential. We cannot marry potentials that is why we fall into the issues that we face everyday in marriages.
“Now one thing that I have learnt through experience to people around me is that when you meet a guy, you start to date, you start to fall in love even before you get to that point where he decides to pop the question way before then, your dating period should be a time where you get to know each other. Not what he likes or who his friends are but who he is as a man in terms of his goals in life. If his goals in life do not work with your own, there is absolutely nothing you can do about it.”
“First of all, there are some questions that I know are very important to ask when it comes to you being with a guy. You want to know what his goals are, who he wants to be but that is not enough. You must make sure that he must be doing something to achieve those goals.
“Another point is, what does he do? If you want to marry a man, he must not be all wealthy or big or must be perfect because there is perfect person, but he must be doing something, he must have focus, something should wake him up in the morning and get him excited to want to do something.
“He doesn’t need to have all the money in the world, he doesn’t even need to have started the business he is doing, but at least see that he is putting plans together, he is meeting people, he is going out there. How does he address himself, how does he represent himself?
“A man without a brand is no man to marry o, I am being very serious. Everyman is a brand in his own right even a man that wants to be a shoe maker. Not people who sit in their house everyday with their huge dreams,”
she added.
She further disclosed that she once dated a man who wanted to be a celebrity but never stepped out of the house except at night where he goes to club and parties with the expectation of meeting of meeting people without branding himself and having what to sell to his potential helpers.

14269  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Policemen Vow To Go On Strike, Disrupt Elections Over Unpaid Salaries on: 18-02-2015 10:54 AM

Over 15,000 police officers have threatened to either go on strike or disrupt the March 28 and April 11 general elections over their unpaid salaries.
The aggrieved officers were those promoted from the rank of sergeant to the rank of Inspector and those promoted from the rank of Inspector to the rank of Assistant Superintendent of Police, ASP, in December 2013.
The policemen claimed that they were promoted since December 2013, but that the police authorities had refused to pay them their new salaries.
They said that after waiting for the police authorities for over a year, they were surprised that they were paid their new salaries with the January 2015 salaries, wondering why the money meant for the 13 months was not included.
One of them told Punch that, “We were promoted in December 2013 and the letters which were given to us indicated that we were to enjoy the benefits accruing to our new rank from the date of our promotion.
“We waited to be paid throughout last year, which was 2014. They didn’t pay us, saying that the money was not yet released.
“In January this year, they paid us the new salary that was commensurate with our new ranks. But they have refused to pay the areas for the 13 month.”

Another officer, who is an ASP, said, “We know that there is corruption in the Force, but how can someone sit on our 13th month salaries and would expect us to keep quiet?
“Elections are coming. They said we should be neutral. How can we be neutral when we are being shortchanged by our bosses and the country?
“We want to be paid or else there would be crisis during the elections. This is the time for us to shout so that Nigerians would know what we are passing through.”

The Force Public Relations Officer, Mr. Emmanuel Ojukwu, said though he had not been briefed about the issue, he nevertheless promised that their grievances would be looked into and addressed.
14270  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Nigeria Lacks Systems, Processes To Prevent Corruption – Ngozi Okonjo on: 18-02-2015 10:44 AM

Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, , Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, on Tuesday, gave reasons corruption has persisted in the country.
According to her, the nation lacks the institutions, systems and processes that are capable of preventing corruption.
Okonjo-Iweala disclosed this in a presentation titled: “Preventing Leakages in the Nigerian Economy” at the Catholic Caritas Foundation Forum in Abuja.
She said the absence of the relevant systems and institutions capable of helping to check corruption has given opportunities for people to engage in the act.
This thing has been with us and we must crack it. This is not something that started in this country today; but it is something that we must crack.
“Fundamentally, we have to ask ourselves, why has this continued to be a problem; I am convinced that it is because we constantly look at the symptoms and not the cause of the disease.
“The cause of the disease is we don’t have in place the institutions, the systems and the processes to block and prevent it in the first place.
“That’s the only difference between us and the people abroad.`

She contended that people will have no option but to do the right thing always if the necessary systems are in place to block and prevent corruption, urging youths in the country to ask the relevant questions that would help tackle corruption in the country.
The minister said: “This is so important now because of technology and I am a total fan of the use of technology and electronic platforms to block the leakages in this country.
“We must use them the way they are being used in other countries.“

According to Okonjo-Iweala, the introduction of the Government Integrated Financial Management System (GIFMS) has remarkably helped in reducing physical movement of cash to make payments and curb corruption while the Integrated Personnel Payment System had also helped government to remove ghost workers from the system and save money in the process.
She said: “We have been able to weed out about 62,893 ghost workers till date saving N208.7 billion and we have not finished in the system. That is addressing the root cause.“
She also added that the names of the persons found to be involved in the act had been sent to the ICPC for further action.
Continuing, she said the introduction of the electronic wallet system by the MInistry of Agriculture has also helped government to reduce corruption in fertilizer distribution in the country, adding that 10.5 million farmers have been registered under the system with more than 6 million being able to access the product personally.
This, she said, had contributed to increased food production.

Justice Muhammed Yinusa of a Federal High Court, Lagos, yesterday fixed March 25, 2015, for ruling on the preliminary objection filed by founder, Living Faith Church a.k.a. Winners’ Chapel, Bishop David Oyedepo, against a suit instituted against him for alleged breach of contract.
The suit was filed by a stockbroking firm, Value Line Securities and Investment Limited, and its Managing Director, Samuel Enyinnaya.
The plaintiffs are seeking, among others, N1.86 billion from Oyedepo, his family, his book publishing company and the Winners’ Chapel over alleged breach of contract on a N9 billion investments entrusted to the plaintiffs.
They prayed the court to declare as illegal the freezing of their bank accounts by NSE and to make an order to immediately unfreeze their accounts.
At the resumed hearing of the case yesterday, Oyedepo’s lawyer, Mr. Chioma Okwuanyi, informed the court of his client’s preliminary objection to the stockbroker’s claims.
Okwuanyi contended that the Federal High Court lacked jurisdiction to adjudicate on a matter pertaining to capital market.
He argued that by the provisions of Section 34 of the Investment and Securities Act, only the Investment and Securities Tribunal had the vested authority to entertain a dispute between a capital market operator and his client.
Okwuanyi further submitted that if it was true as the plaintiffs had said that the matter was “a simple contract” bordering on investment portfolio management, the state High Court and not the Federal High Court had jurisdiction on the case.
Besides, the lawyer argued that the plaintiffs’ suit as presently constituted before Justice Mohammed Yunusa was premature, as the plaintiff had yet to explore all the avenues laid down to resolve such dispute before heading for the court.

Olateju, who resides at No. 17, Sabiu Ajose St., Surulere, Lagos State, is facing a three-count charge of obtaining by false pretence, issuance of a dishonoured cheque and stealing.
The prosecutor, Insp. Chris Takim, told the court that the accused had on Nov. 21, 2013 fraudulently obtained the sum of N5.1 million from one Joseph Alegieuno at 6Js Bureau De Change Ltd. Lagos.
According to Takim, the accused and her husband, Jide, approached the complainant, who is the Managing Director of 6Js, on Nov. 8, 2013 to sell $32,300 at the rate of N5.1 million.
He said that Olateju collected the amount while her husband stood as a guarantor for his wife.

14278  Forum / Politics / “Your Utterances Mock The Status Of A General” – Military Reacts to Obasanjo on: 16-02-2015 04:55 PM

The Nigerian Defence headquarters has reacted to a statement credited to former President, Olusegun Obasanjo on the postponement of the 2015 elections and the role of the military, assuring that it remains, and will continue on its path of professionalism in the discharge of its duties at all times.
In a statement posted on its blog today, the military authorities in a respectful tone, stated that it is not “inept in the discharge of its duties, nor is it being misused for political ends in the manner the retired General Obasanjo who was also a former President has possibly been made to believe.”
Below is the full statement
The Defence Headquarters has noted the remarks of a former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo as reported in the media stating his views on perceived state of the armed forces and the roles being allegedly played by the military in the nation’s political process in recent times.
“The leadership and cross section of the military believes that the former President and retired General has every right to be interested in the actions and fate of the military. Hence, his views like many others will continue to be accorded the well-deserved attention.
“It is however noteworthy that most of his utterances lately indicate an attitude of playing to the gallery or indulging in politicization of serious national security or military affairs.
“For instance, the comments credited to Chief Obasanjo alleging that the postponement of the General Elections was to enable President Jonathan to use the Service Chiefs to plot a tenure extension is to say the least, very surprising.
“It is surprising indeed, considering the fact that the retired General chose to ignore the clarification and emphatic assurances of non-partisanship of the military as declared in a DHQ statement on the position of the Armed Forces in the ongoing political activities.

“His motive as usual remains unknown but it is certainly less than noble or well intentioned. We dare say again that Chief Obasanjo’s assertions are false.
“Much as the military desires to respect the old General and his views, it has become necessary to point out that his conduct and unguarded utterances of late has fallen short of the standard of discipline expected of an individual who has had the privilege of service in the military and risen to the status of a General.
The behavior of retired General (Chief) Obasanjo has been so unbecoming and continues to constitute a serious embarrassment to the military before all who have reasonably and rightly adjudged the essence of military background in terms of the high value and standard it tends to contribute to statesmanship.
“We feel constrained to remind the old General that the world has moved beyond that parochial and self-adulating reasoning and mindset which he seems stuck to.
“Indeed, he needs to be told that by virtue of their better training, exposure, education, assessment and environment, the military personnel of today are already far beyond his level in their appreciation of democracy and it’s indispensability for the stable and prosperous society which Nigerians cherish.
“In this instance, the military wishes to inform the retired General, that the institution which he bequeathed to the nation has .certainly developed beyond how he left it. The Nigerian military is now better placed to strive for the maintenance of the legacies and ethos of service, valour, subordination to constituted authorities, and nonpartisan commitment to duty and fatherland.

“It has to be restated that the military as an institution, is neither as inept in the discharge of its duties, nor is it being misused for political ends in the manner the retired General Obasanjo who was also a former President has possibly been made to believe.
“Indeed, the system now strongly believes in Democracy as well as its structures and institutions to the extent that it will do nothing whatsoever to undermine or truncate the steady growth and development of the nation’s democracy. The military will remain professional as it keeps doing its best along with others to ensure adequate security and defence of the nation’s territorial integrity in this auspicious period in the country.
“The Defence Headquarters will like to encourage Chief Obasanjo to be genuinely interested in the growth and sustenance of Nigeria’s democratic credentials. He is also enjoined to endeavor to improve in his understanding of intricate issues and try to encourage the military rather than continue with this tendency to indulge in imputation of ulterior motives to every effort, all for the purpose of discrediting well thought out policies or decisions related to the military’s roles in the polity.
