103  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Residents Doctors Protest Poor Working Conditions, Shortage Of Manpower In Kogi on: 2-05-2024 05:31 PM

Residents Doctors at the Federal Teaching Hospital Lokoja, FTHL on Thursday protested over the shortage of manpower and alleged obnoxious policies introduced by the management of the hospital led by Dr Olatunde Alabi.

The protesting doctors carried placard with various inscriptions saying, ‘We want to work, not to work and die,’ don’t kill us, stop using no work no pay to threaten us, ‘Federal Teaching Hospital Lokoja doctors are dying help,” give us call meals,’ end casualization of doctors, “Federal Government, Mr President, come to our aide, among others.

The Resident Doctors protested around the hospital premises to register their grievances against the management of the hospital.

Addressing journalists, some of the protesting doctors who did not want their names in print over fear of victimization noted that their female colleagues have been losing their pregnancies because of too much workload.

Quote
” The management of Federal Teaching Hospital Lokoja has been very disappointing to us. One of the issues we have been raising with them for overtime is the shortage of manpower. I want to put it on record that in 2020, we had about 222 resident doctors in this hospital.

” For over four years now, many of them have moved outside the shores of this country. Some moved to the consultant cadre while others resigned and moved to other centres. We are now left with only 64 Residents doctors. The workload keeps on increasing on daily basis. We have told the management to employ but they keep on telling us that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has refused to give him, (Chief Medical Director Federal Teaching Hospital Lokoja Dr Olatunde Alabi) a waiver to employ.

” So we keep asking him, why has Mr President not given the CMD waiver to employ new resident doctors in the hospital? We asked them if they can’t employ, why can’t they reduce the workload, they said no. In this hospital, doctors are running 48 hours without a call meal. There is one devilish platform called Gifnis. The platform is so devilish that when doctors are put on that platform, they do not have access to their minimum wage and arrears.

” This platform is being used as an excuse to casualize doctors. You won’t imagine that at this age and time, there will be hospitals that will employ doctors as locums. Locums are derogatory statements. They should not be used for doctors.

” President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is trying to make the health sector to be the first in the whole world and some people are employing doctors under a gifnis platform which is devilish and they are calling them casuals. They keep recycling their monthly salary. It shouldn’t be.

” We want an end to the Gifnis platform for doctors in Federal Teaching Hospital Lokoja. We also want an end to the point where people will say they don’t have a waiver to employ doctors. There should be speedy advertisements for doctors and all arrears of doctors in Federal Teaching Hospital Lokoja should be paid. We are patriotic. Every worker deserves his reward and wages”.

The Chairman, Nigeria Medical Association, NMA, Kogi State Dr Baoku Olusola who joined the Resident Doctor’s protest said, ” it is a sad day for us here in Kogi State. You can see that I am wearing black as much as all the doctors that are here. The doctors are angry and sad and of course, in extension, the NMA is sad because of the event that is actually taking place in Federal Teaching Hospital Lokoja.

“We have been communicated three times in the last three months concerning the burning issues in Federal Teaching Hospital Lokoja. We have been hoping and praying the management of the hospital would have found a middle ground in resolving all this issue.

“Yesterday was labour day and the Senate Present Godswill Akpabio said President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has declared that no workers must be made to work under harsh, severe situations. So, we are expecting that the leadership and the management of Federal Teaching Hospital Lokoja will call these doctors who are patriotic enough to stay in this Country and do their work under very harsh conditions, meet with them, listen to them and be able to solve their problems.

“People can not be on duty for 48 hours and there will be no food to eat. What if they collapse? Somebody resuscitating another can collapse. So who will resuscitate who? They are completely overworked. These doctors are fighting for their living wages. I can’t imagine that with all the things Mr President has put in place about workers, there are some doctors who are not getting 35,000 wage awards, doctors are being casualized on a platform called GIFMIS and so many problems going on in this hospital.

“I am telling you, go and confirm, in FTHL, doctors are not getting their 35,000 wage award. There are piles of arrears for the past years that are not being paid to doctors. We are also aware that FTHL which has about 500 beds and runs on over 200 doctors now runs on 64 resident doctors. That is a collapse of a system”

He called on the Federal Government led by President Ahmed Bola Tinubu to quickly intervene by addressing the demands of the resident doctors at the Federal Teaching Hospital Lokoja.

“Things are going beyond what anybody could say. It will be peaceful anytime soon. Before these doctors will go and die one after the other or shut down the system, the federal government should quickly intervene and bring this problem to a reasonable end” he stated.

The Resident doctors vowed to continue their protest until their demands are met by the management of the hospital.

107  Forum / Politics / Presidency Faults Organised Labour Over ₦615,000 Minimum Wage Demand on: 2-05-2024 02:19 PM

The Presidency has reacted to the minimum wage of N615,000 demanded by the organised labour.

It queried where it would get such money to pay workers, stating that it was not feasible.

Recall that the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) President, Joe Ajaero, had said the organised labour had proposed N615,000 as the new minimum wage to the federal government.

In an interview on Channels Television on Wednesday, Ajaero said the proposed minimum wage was based on an analysis of the current economic situation and the needs of an average Nigerian family of six.

However, in a chat with The Punch, the Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, said the Federal Government cannot pay the proposed minimum wage demanded by the labour unions.

The presidential aide added that the parties must agree on an amount feasible for the government and the private sector to pay or the current negotiation impasse would continue.

He said, “It is an open affair. The NLC President, Ajaero, told the public today they were asking for N615,000 per month as minimum wage. So, where will the money come from? Do we have that kind of money to pay? The government cannot afford any minimum wage that it cannot pay.

“So, the President is hoping that maybe at their next meeting, everybody will come to some reasonable agreement that would reflect what the government and the private sector can pay.”

109  Forum / Politics / Peter Obi Reacts To The Deaths Of 35 Nigerians In Horrific Kogi, Enugu Road Clashes on: 2-05-2024 02:01 PM

Peter Obi, the Labour Party's Presidential candidate in the 2023 election, has attributed the deaths of 35 individuals from accidents in Kogi and Enugu states to inadequate road infrastructure and insecurity during President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's administration.

Obi disclosed this in several posts on his official X handle on Wednesday.

Recall that accidents in Kogi on Sunday claimed 19 persons, while that in Enugu led to the death of 16 persons on Tuesday.

According to him, the nation’s resources should be channelled to build internal roads, not the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Superhighway.

Quote
“I have just confirmed two very gory road accidents in Kogi and Enugu states, respectively, that claimed the lives of 35 persons.

“The Kogi incident happened on Sunday along Okene/Lokoja bye, where 19 persons were roasted alive, while the other occurred along Nsukka/Enugu Road in Enugu state on Tuesday, claiming the lives of sixteen persons.

“The Enugu State Police Command and Kogi State Federal Road Service Corps, FRSC, have confirmed the two accidents.

“Even though the cause of the accidents is yet unknown, it must not be unconnected with the bad conditions of roads and insecurities.

“This is why I continue to shout out that our meagre resources should be channelled at priority areas to fix our internal roads to make them passable before going for super highway projects, which will take the chunk of the resources meant for these essential areas.

“My heart goes to the families of the deceased and the injured as I pray to God to give them the strength to bear the huge loss. My condolences also go to the governments and the people of Kogi and Enugu states”
, he stated.

Obi had disagreed with the Nigerian federal government on the rationale for constructing a 700-kilometre Lagos-Calabar Coastal highway.

However, the Nigerian government accused Obi of inciting Igbos against the Tinubu government.

113  Forum / The Buzz Central / Yoruba Actors, Ogogo & Yinka Quadri’s Squash Long Standing Beef As They Are Spotted At An Event on: 2-05-2024 01:36 PM

A recent viral footage capturing veteran actors Taiwo Hassan, aka Ogogo, and Yinka Quadri hugging each other is making waves on social media.

While the cause of the resolved long-standing feud remains unclear, the once-close allies, Ogogo and Mr Quadri, fell out years ago.

The discord became more evident when Mr Quadri was noticeably absent at the wedding and naming ceremony of Ogogo’s daughter, Shakirat Taiwo, in December 2023.

Shakira, a content creator, tied the knot with her footballer beau, Lawal Yusuf.

The veteran actors reconciled at actor Yomi Fabiyi’s dual celebration event—a housewarming and birthday party held on Wednesday at Emfelix event and conference venue in Idiaba, Ogun State.

The star-studded gathering included esteemed actors and actresses such as Kareem Adepoju, aka Baba Wande, Ladi Folarin, Idowu Philips, aka Iya Rainbow, Shola Kosoko, Toyosi Adesanya, Peju Ajiboye, among others.

In the now-viral footage, the legendary chanter Sulaiman Ajobiewe ended the actors’ feud

In the video, Mr Quadri was seen on stage spraying Ajobiewe, who sat on a chair and beckoned Ogogo to join them.

After a few moments, Ogogo joined Mr Quadri, dressed in Agbada, on stage, and together they sprayed money on Ajobiewe.

As the actors stood together on stage, Ajobiewe chanted, “I pray God’s mercy upon you both. Whatever the issue, let it end here. We cannot live without occasionally offending one another.

“I implore you, in the name of God, embrace each other and let this be the end of it. I pleaded with you using my parents’ names to put this matter to rest. Let’s forgive and forget for the sake of God.”

The actors joined the ranks of celebrities who reconciled their feuds. They followed in the footsteps of actress Toyin Abraham and Funke Akindele, who resolved their rivalry after years of contention over Box Office dominance.

On her Instagram page in April, Toyin lamented the competitive atmosphere that fueled animosity, especially within the Yoruba movie industry.

She highlighted how fan wars exacerbated their unnecessary feud. She congratulated Funke for reaching the one billion milestone with her ‘A Tribe Called Judah’ at the cinema, prompting a positive response from Funke.

Last year, the two actresses settled their differences, with Toyin celebrating Funke on her birthday and receiving reciprocal wishes.

In a further display of solidarity, Toyin attended the premiere of Funke Akindele’s movie, ‘She Must Be Obeyed.’

The Federal Government has assured victims of last Saturday’s tanker gas explosion at Ita-Oshin, Abeokuta, Ogun State capital, of adequate compensation.

The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, disclosed this yesterday when he paid an on-the-spot assessment visit to the scene of the accident. The fire accident, which involved a tanker gas truck belonging to Gasco Marine Ltd, Abeokuta, claimed the life of the “motor boy” of the gas laden tanker while about six vehicles and two other shops were equally burnt.

Ekpo, who came with the Authority Chief Executive of Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), Farouk Ahmed, said that the Federal Government delegation was in the state assess situation of things as far as the accident is concerned and see how to forestall a reoccurrence.

The minister charged stakeholders in the gas industry to prioritise issues of standards and safety measures as the Federal Government won’t allow the lives of its citizens to be so endangered.

He said the country is transiting to use of CNG as an alternative fuel and that anything that may want to hurt the confidence of the people or make people to begin to feel that CNG is not safe to use with the type of accident that happened in Abeokuta and Port Harcourt involving CNG trucks is really a source of concern.

He said: “Nigeria’s gas resources are up to 208 trillion cubic feet and we have to make use of it in the way that it should be to drive the economy of this nation. “So, what we are emphasising on is maintaining safety standards because anything that falls beyond this won’t be appreciated. “When we visited where the cylinders were kept, we saw a crack on it which may be that it was not up to standard.”
