South Africa 2013: Nigeria Draws Against Liberia

The Super Eagles of Nigeria will engage the Lone Star of Liberia in the second and final round of the 2013 South Africa Nations Cup qualifiers. Nigeria was drawn to engage its West African neighbour in an elaborate draw conducted yesterday at the Emperors Palace in Johannesburg yesterday evening. The Eagles will travel to Monrovia on the weekend of September 7 to 9 for the first leg and will host Liberia in the weekend of October 12 to 14. The winner of the two-legged encounter will pick the ticket to the finals which will kick off in South Africa from January 19 to February 10 next year.

It will be winner takes all encounters and must win for Super Eagles to secure a berth in the finals. Eagles’ assistant coach, Dan-iel Amokachi, and former South Africa skipper, Neil Tovey, were on hand to pick the draws at the occasion which was also attended by soccer dignitaries from all over Africa. 

The live show, which started at 6.35 pm South African local time also attracted a wonderful collection of African greats as well as top coaches and leading administrators on the continent.

The draws proper which began five minutes after the show and was opened with a speech from South Africa’s Minister of Sport and Recreation, Fikile Mbalula, saw Mali drawing Botswana in the first game of the final quali-fying round.

Nigeria’s draw was the fourth game of the night.

The draw for the finals proper will be held on October 26 in Dur-ban. Host South Africa has been drawn in Group A and Durban will host the opening and final game.
