Prince Muoka Ebuka, a 43-year-old Nigerian from Obosi, Anambra State, was allegedly beaten to death by police officers in South Africa on Friday, May 17, 2024. The incident occurred in Danielskuil, Northern Cape, during a raid on his residence under the suspicion of drug dealing.

The Nigerian Union South Africa (NUSA) condemned the killing in a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Habib Miller, on Saturday, May 18. "This incident highlights a disturbing trend of police abuse targeting Nigerians in the Northern Cape," the statement read.

The raid, based on allegations of drug involvement, led to a violent confrontation. Ebuka’s wife, Joyce, reported that officers stormed their home, forcing her to evacuate with their young child to avoid the violence. Ebuka was then allegedly assaulted and coerced to produce drugs, which were not found. He was subsequently taken to a waste dump where officers accused him of hiding illegal substances.

Eyewitnesses reported severe misconduct, noting that officers requested pepper spray after leaving Ebuka’s residence. Despite using drug detection methods, no drugs were discovered. The intense interrogation allegedly led to Ebuka's death, raising concerns about the integrity of the investigation due to improper preservation of the crime scene.

Miller noted further distress when police refused to issue a statement or allow the family to open a case docket. Joyce Ebuka faced intimidation when attempting to report her husband's death.

NUSA has demanded a thorough, impartial investigation into Prince Ebuka’s killing and the broader issue of police abuse in the Northern Cape. This incident follows similar cases in Kimberley and the killing of another Nigerian, Chika Anuino, by police in Springs, Johannesburg, on April 25.

The Federal Government of Nigeria has expressed its intention to investigate the incident. Abdur-Rahman Balogun, spokesperson for the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, condemned the death, calling it "one death too many." He emphasized the need for a thorough investigation and accountability for those responsible.

"Condemnable and sad. One death too many. We are calling for an investigation, and anyone found culpable should face the music,” Balogun told The Punch.

Why hating on black skin men, are you not also black. Is it because the white men who colonized you slept with your mothers?
