A 35-year-old Nigerian man named Benjamin Chiemelie Ene has been arrested on Koh Phangan, a popular tourist island in Surat Thani Province, Thailand, for overstaying his visa by nine months.
According to Pol Lt Col Winit Bunchit of the Tourist Police, the arrest followed complaints from local residents who reported that Ene was claiming to be an influential person from Nigeria and demanding free food and accommodation.
When police located Ene, he attempted to flee but was quickly apprehended. Upon investigation, it was discovered that he had overstayed his visa by 276 days. Ene was subsequently taken to the Koh Phangan police station for further legal action.
In Thailand, the penalty for overstaying a visa is 500 baht per day, with a maximum fine of 20,000 baht.
The local community expressed relief after his arrest, noting that Ene's behavior had caused significant concern. Many local businesses reported feeling intimidated by his claims of having influential connections in Nigeria, which he used to obtain free services.
