The 44-member Senate Committee on Constitution Review will be considering requests for the creation of 46 new states from the different geo-political regions across the country.
Although sources within the National Assembly hinted that the Senate had received 62 requests from different ethnic groups, states, and other interest groups across the country, a document obtained yesterday by Daily Trust from the Senate put such requests at 46.
The new states being sought to be created in the region are Ahoada from the present Rivers State, Toru-Ebe (Delta/Edo/Ondo), Ogoja (Cross River), Urhobo (Delta), Minji-Se (Rivers), Ado (Delta), Bori (Rivers), Anioma (Delta), Oil Rivers (Akwa Ibom/Rivers), Warri (Delta), New Delta (Delta) Ethiope (Delta) and Orimile (Delta/Anambra/Imo). The region, according to the document, is also seeking the creation of Confluence State to be carved out of the present Kogi, Nasarawa and Edo States.
While North-East is requesting additional three states of Katagum (Bauchi), Amana (Adamawa) and New Borno (Borno); North-West is demanding five states of Karaduwa (Katsina), Gurara (Kaduna), New Kaduna (Kaduna) as well as Tiga and Ghari (Kano).
Requests from North-Central are for the creation of six states which include Apa (Benue), Kainji (Niger), Edu (Niger/Kwara), Okura (Kogi), Borgu (Niger) and Okun (Kogi/Ekiti/Kwara/Ondo).
Ten requests from South-West are for the creation of such new states as Lagoon (Lagos), New Oyo (Oyo), Remo-Ijebu (Ogun), Ijesha (Osun), Oduduwa (Osun), Oluwa (Ondo) Ijebu (Ogun), Ibadan (Oyo), Yewa (Ogun) and Ose (Ondo).
South-East is pushing for seven states which are Aba (Abia), Adada (Enugu), Njaba (Imo), Orashi (Imo/Anambra), Ugwuaku (Imo/Abia/Anambra/Enugu), Etiti (Imo/Abia/Anambra) and Equity (Abia/Anambra/Enugu/Imo/Ebonyi).
A member of the committee and chairman of the Senate Committee on Rules and Business, Senator Ita Enang (PDP, Awka Ibom North-East) yesterday said though senators were motivating their constituents to agitate for more states, none of them (senators), had either sponsored a bill or moved a motion on the issue.
