OSOGBO – One student was confirmed dead while another is on danger list following a bloody clash between two cult groups at Osun State Polytechnic, Iree.
Though detail of the clash was still sketchy at press time, it was, however, gathered that the two groups, in a show of supremacy, engaged one another in a free-for- all where the two victims, who sustained serious injuries, were rushed to hospitals, where one of them was confirmed dead shortly on admission.
It was gathered that despite that the institution was on mid-semester break for the past 10 days, many students stayed back in their residences off campus.
Investigation revealed that the cultists used the opportunity of the break to launch attack on one another.
When contacted, the State Police Commissioner, Mrs. Kalafite Adeyemi, confirmed the incident, explaining that one of the suspected cult members was still unconscious in the hospital where he was admitted while the police had taken over the corpse for autopsy.
Adeyemi added that: "The police have since intervened in the matter and five persons have been arrested by the security operatives in connection with the matter and they have given the police useful information on the matter."
Meanwhile, the authorities of the institution declared that it had handed over two students of the institution allegedly involved in the fracas to the police.
In a statement, the Media Relations Officer of the school, Mr. Tope Abiola, said the suspected cultists inflicted severe injuries on some students outside the campus specifically at Eyinade area, Ikirun Road.
The authorities, while condemning the act, urged the police to intensify their investigation to bring the culprits to justice.
