The team fell 0-1 to Peru last Thursday morning in a match Keshi felt should have been won if the boys showed enough commitment. He told the players yesterday to approach the games against Namibia as well as the 2013 Africa Nations Cup qualifier against Rwanda with the seriousness they deserve.
In particular, Keshi wants the players to score plenty goals, starting with the June 3 cracker against Namibia at the U.J. Esuene Stadium. The Super Eagles train twice daily at 7.30a.m and 330p.m inside the UNICAL Sports Ground.
According to the Media Officer, Ben Alaiya, the training at UNICAL Sports Ground will continue until the team moves to the U.J. Esuene Stadium on Thursday to perfect strategies against the visiting Namibians.
For Keshi, no matter how pretty a team plays, goalscoring abilities remain the ultimate decider of matches, hence his advise to the strikers not only to be aggressive in front of goal, but to also ensure that they are 70 per cent on target at all times.
He said: “In our time, matches against teams like Namibia are not discussed in terms of whether we will win, but how many goals we will score, and that is what I want us to return to in the new Super Eagles.”
However, he stated yesterday that the Namibians, who have been training in Germany for the qualifier, must not be underrated, adding: “They say we are the super power and Namibians are minnows. Those are only words, and until we show it on the pitch, we will just be living in a fool’s paradise.”
Keshi has named Vincent Enyeama the team’s skipper for the match against Namibia. Enyeama is expected to continue in that role until substantive skipper Joseph Yobo recovers from injuries.
Twenty-two players were present in yesterday morning’s training, with only Papa Idris not fully involved in action, as he was still recovering from past knocks.
The foreign-based professionals who trained yesterday were Sone Aluko, Victor Moses, Ikechukwu Uche, Efe Ambrose, Fengor Ogude, Elderson Echejile, Gege Soriola, Ekigho Ehiosun, Ahmed Musa and Vincent Enyeama, joined by the 12 home-based stars unveiled over the weekend and led by Warri Wolves’ goalie, Chigozie Agbim.
In the afternoon, Montpellier of France’s hero, John Utaka, and Israel-based goalie Austin Ejide joined the camp.
