The Allan Woods Institute yesterday commenced its executive training workshop for top management officers of two reputable corporate organisations.

The Acting Managing Director, Allan Woods, Mr Suleiman Ibrahim, said that Allan Woods, a subsidiary of Leadership Group, had commenced its capacity building of some corporate organisations as a mark of its readiness to develop human resources in both the private and public sectors in order to enhance vibrant socio-economic development in the country.

Ibrahim said: “The second level of our programmes is for top and middle level managers. We just started the capacity building programme today. We are running three programmes concurrentl - Mastering Leadership Skills, Advanced Public Relations, and Contract Administration. The participants are from NIGCOMSAT and Enterprise Bank Plc.

“Allan Woods is an education subsidiary of Leadership Group, we run programmes for all categories of students. There is the pre-degree programme for those who have completed their secondary education and who are planning to study abroad.

“The institute has the foundation and the ‘A’ level programmes. We have the international art programme, and international medical programme for one year, which if the student passes, he or she is admitted into 200 level to study medicine in the United Kingdom. Once a student goes through these programmes, he is able to proceed to higher academic programmes in Europe and the United States of America (USA), as well as in Asia countries.”

Ibrahim noted that the institute was widely recognised globally, and did not have any kind of affiliation with universities abroad.

“Allan Woods is widely recognised by several universities in the continents I mentioned. Even one of our students has got admission to study architecture at the University of Huddersfield, and she was also awarded scholarship. In fact, the programmes serve as preparatory test for those who want to study abroad,” he said.

Our mission is to develop the capacity of Nigerians from the post-secondary to top career management officers.”

Meanwhile, resource persons at the executive training workshop said the institute had started in the right direction with human capacity building. Mr Prince Samuel Momoh, a management consultant said:”I am training the participants on ‘the leader in you and the quest for excellence.’ The major core reason for the training is to expose the participants what do know about themselves as a prospective leader, and also to make them understand that leaders are not only made, but by circumstance also. It will help them in managerial activities as they respond to the call of leadership.”

Mr Reginald Bob Manuel, an economist said, “Basically, the participants have background in corporate affairs, and they need to understand the relationship within their organisation and the general public, especially coming from the background of a government agency that is highly specialised in communication satellite, which a lot of people do not understand the level of growth of our economy which they have to work hard to properly tell the public what they actually do.”

Mr Samuel Fojule, a consultant said that, “The basics of contract management is to enhance the bottom-line, and is to avoid waste. The contract management in the country has been seen as one off-thing. It is to help to know the qualified bidder and the risk involved.  We are looking at the whole system of contract management itself from procurement planning to contract close out. Once this is imparted into the participants it will help them to become better managers at their desk.”

Some of the students at the foundation level of the institute also told LEADERSHIP that the institute had made them to excel in their academics and had made some of them to gain admission to study abroad.

Zainab Abdulaziz Yar ‘Adua said,”I was attracted to further my education at Allan Woods, because of the sound academic programmes the institution runs. I am a foundation student studying medicine. I was admitted into the institute in September 2011 and will graduate in July 2012. In fact, the lecturers are doing their best as you can see. I have gotten admission to study at the University of Newcastle, UK.”

Saffiyyah Amatullah Sanusi said, “I was admitted into Allan Woods in September 2011 to study civil engineering. The school has the right facilities, lecturers and the environment is conducive for learning. I have gotten admission at the University Of Huddersfield, UK, and a scholarship at Glamorgan, UK.”
