Police in the northern city of Kano have apprehended the killers of retired Deputy inspector General of Police, Mr.  Abubakar Saleh Ningi.  The Islamist group Boko Haram had Wednesday claimed responsibility for the killing of the former police chief and vowed more

of such attacks.

A usually reliable source in Kano says one of the assassins who was injured by the late DIG's orderly  was taken to an undisclosed hospital for treatment, where he was picked up by the Police following tip off from an official of the hospital who was not convinced with his explanation of the circumstances leading to his gun injuries.

Ningi and other top police officers were relieved of duty in January following coordinated bomb and gun attacks in Kano, northern Nigeria's largest city and commercial centre, that killed at least 185 people.

"Yesterday God gave us victory and we succeeded in killing a former DIG (deputy inspector general)... in Kano city," the sect said in an email statement to reporters late Wednesday.

The group also vowed to carry out more of such killings of senior government officials.

"By God's grace very soon top government officials will have no peace as we will intensify attacks on them wherever they are," it said.

Two gunmen on a motorcycle shot dead Abubakar Saleh Ningi, his driver and a bodyguard in Kano on Tuesday, where Boko Haram has carried out a wave of attacks.
