Nigerian Football Player Slumps and Dies during Match

Niyi Lawal, a player with Wonder Star Football Club, slumped and died during a match in Ogun State on Wednesday.

Lawal’s team was playing against Timosteve Football Club in the quarter-finals of the ongoing Remmy Hazzan Unity Cup, organised among the 15 wards in Odogbolu Local Government Area of Ogun State.

According to sources, 26-year-old Lawal suddenly slumped during the match and was quickly rushed to Dideolu Specialist Hospital in Ikenne, where he was confirmed dead.

The Coordinator of the competition, Tunde Adamson, described Lawal’s death as shocking, adding that the incident had been reported at the Odogbolu Police Station

“The boy’s death was a pathetic one, no one could ever think of such tragedy,” he said.

“The boy just slumped on the pitch without having contact with anybody. We rushed him to the hospital where we were told that he had died. We were not satisfied with the doctor’s statement, we had to take him again to OLabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital, OOUTH, Sagamu where we were told the same thing. We have officially reported the death at the Odogbolu Police Station.”

Meanwhile, the body has been deposited at the Shensy Mortuary, a private morgue located at Oke Owa area of the local government.

The team’s coach, popularly called Osupa, disclosed that Lawal was in good health before the match.

“I don’t believe that Niyi is dead. The boy gave no sign of any sickness. He just slumped and died like that,” he said amidst tears.

Lawal is survived by a wife and two children.
