Opeifa told News Agency of Nigeria that water transportation became imperative following anticipated gridlock during the bridge’s repairs.
He said the ferry services were safe and quicker means of transportation.
“The waterways transport is now better and safer managed by the Lagos State Waterways Authority,” he said.
Opeifa also said ferry services from the Ogudu jetty would complement transportation in the state during the repairs.
He explained that the Ogudu jetty was opened for ferry services, in spite of the fact that it had not been inaugurated.
“We have adequately dredged the waterways for easy and smooth ride and safety regulations have been put in place,” he said.
Opeifa advised motorists to park their cars at home and ride in either the ferries or the Bus Rapid Transit and LAGBUS buses to reduce traffic on the roads.
He said 700 officials of the state Traffic Management Authority would be deployed in the area and strategic routes to control traffic.
He said military personnel, the police and other security agencies would assist LASTMA.
Opeifa urged those who must take their vehicles to the Island to use alternative routes such as Adeniji Adele, Carter Bridge, Murtala Mohammed Way, Ikorodu Road, Funsho Williams Avenue, Eko Bridge, Ijora Causeway, Wharf Road, Oshodi-Apapa Expressway among other routes.
He said that those coming from Victoria Island to the Mainland before noon could divert at the Adeniji Adele interchange to exit through Carter Bridge and link any of the alternative routes.
He said those coming from Ibadan to the Island should avoid the Third Mainland Bridge by using Ikorodu Road, Oshodi-Apapa Expressway and Agege Motor Road.
The state Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps, Mr. Nseobong Akpabio, said the corps would coordinate the various traffic agencies involved in the exercise.
He said, “Appropriate traffic management measures aimed at improving the flow of traffic would be in place throughout the duration.”
The Managing Director of LASWA, Mr Adeyinka Marinho, said that many ferry operators were partnering with the agency toward leveraging the transport needs of Lagos residents.
