The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has uncovered over $300,000 allegedly laundered by a suspected internet fraudster in Auchi, Edo State.
In a statement released on Monday, EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale revealed that the suspect was one of 35 individuals arrested on Sunday in a targeted operation based on intelligence reports about widespread cybercrime in the area.
“Investigations revealed that the suspect had collected and laundered over $300,000 for his syndicate members who are currently at large,” Oyewale stated.
He added that the funds were funnelled through a network of online scams and fraudulent schemes.
The agency also disclosed that beyond internet fraud, the suspect is allegedly tied to complex investment and banking fraud schemes, broadening the scope of the charges he may face.
The EFCC assured the public that the suspect would be prosecuted once investigations were complete.
“The Commission is committed to dismantling these criminal networks and bringing all culprits to justice,” the statement said.
This development highlights the ongoing efforts by Nigerian authorities to clamp down on financial crimes and cyber fraud, which have been on the rise in recent years.
The identities of the other suspects and further details of the operation were not immediately released, but the EFCC reiterated its call for citizens to report suspicious online financial activities.
Investigations into the broader syndicate are ongoing.
