Efforts to trace the cause of the death over 59 children just in one hospital within 3 months have been intensified in the last days. Among 66 children aged 2-3 admitted in Kantha Bopha Children Hospital, only 2 are still alive but not really living. The Institut Pasteur in Cambodia tested samples taken from 24 patients and found 15 had tested positive for Enterovirus Type 71, a common cause of hand, foot and mouth disease that can also cause severe neurological complications, mainly in children. The World Health Organization (WHO) also noted that a "significant proportion of the samples" had tested positive for EV71, but it cautioned that the outbreak had not been fully solved, and more analysis was needed. The WHO said that other pathogens had been detected in the investigations, including dengue and Streptococcus suis. It added that samples tested negative for H5N1 and other influenza viruses.

The way the syndrome is attacking the children is "merciless," Dr. Sanjay Gupta, CNN's chief medical correspondent, said from Cambodia. "It eat them up alive". In one sample case, it ate up about 4 ribs of the patient in less than 5 hours. The fear is high that dozens more could still die as the mysterous killer remains not completely ravelled and spreads. It is difficult to estimate how many children have died outside the hospitals.

In Nigeria, medical examination and research wouldn't have been necessary as we all would have known the cause before it happened: "Witchcraft" from the villagers.

Dear, science and technology are unwelcome guests in Nigeria. We have more efficient methods here than science. For instance, if you loose a family member, you don't go wasting money for autopsy or wasting time with untrained uncivilized illiterate corrupt hungry police officers for investigation. Just look around the neighbourhood, single out one old probably ugly man or woman you don't like so much and he or she becomes the killer. Or better still contact one of the unrepentant criminals in white garment or suit with big bibles from one of the nearest 'churches' and he 'll be glad to instantly tell you who the killer is.

Isn't that more efficient and time saving?
