This was disclosed yesterday in Gusau by the Executive Chairman of the board, Alhaji Muhammad Mujitaba shortly after a team of experts from the Joint Tax Board (JTB) carried out a sensitisation workshop for the staff of the board.
According to him, the tax collectors had been facing difficulties in the discharge of their functions which he attributed to poor publicity but added that “I can assure you now that since I took up the mantle of leadership of the board about a year ago, we embarked on aggressive awareness campaign throughout the state.”
He said that the campaigns were carried out on radio, television and billboards and that the response of the taxpayers had improved “which in turn increased our collections.”
The chairman who stated that he had continued to place emphasis on the training of his staff said that six directors of the board had travelled to South Africa to acquire more knowledge in tax administration.
He explained that soon all income earners in the state “including tomato sellers and commercial motor-cyclists will be paying tax to the state government.”
Also speaking to LEADERSHIP, the team leader of TIN from the Joint Tax Board, Barr. Musa Shehu who expressed satisfaction over the professional ways the board was being handled in the state said: “I am very confident that internal revenue generation through tax collection in the state will more than double in the near future.”
