The officers were killed when the Toyota Hilux van marked Lagos DF 413 AAA they were traveling on their way from Sango where they had gone to arrest the two suspects collided with a blue DAF stationary truck with number plate Lagos XU 502 JJJ in Iyani Onigbedu, Itori, Ewekoro Local Government Area at about 10.00am. Another 16-passenger yellow Nissan Urvan bus marked Lagos XM 440 BDG also rammed into the police Hilux van from behind.
Ten other passengers in the bus also sustained injuries in the accident which claimed the lives of Inspectors Thomas Olorunjuwon and Ojo Johnbull as well as the unidentified suspect.
An eyewitness, who pleaded anonymity, said the policemen died on the spot while one of the two suspects they had gone to arrest died later in the hospital. The second suspect only sustained serious injuries.
The suspects and other injured passengers on the bus were earlier taken to the Ifo General Hospital by sympathisers for treatment.
A survivor of the accident said, “There was no sign of an impending accident until we drove past the Ewekoro Cement Plant heading towards Abeokuta when suddenly the driver, drove menacingly. Before we could realise what was happening, he had rammed into a stationary truck with some passengers crying for help.”
Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Muyiwa Adejobi, confirmed the death of the policemen.
The Federal Road Safety Commission Unit Commander for Itori, Fatai Bakare, confirmed that one other person in addition to the two police officers was killed in the accident while ten others sustained injuries.
Bakare said the accident involving two vehicles and a truck must have been caused by dangerous driving.
