Soldiers went wild yesterday and attacked officers of the Lagos State Taskforce on Environmental and Special Offences (Enforcement) Unit at Yaba area of Lagos, Southwest Nigeria.

This might not be unconnected with the ‘humiliation’ of an Army Colonel by Governor Babatunde Fashola on Tuesday for driving on BRT lane.

The soldiers attacked the taskforce officials with bottles and stones and used knife to puncture two tyres of the Black Maria used in conveying offenders.

Trouble started on Murtala Muhammed Way, Yaba close to an Army barracks when the taskforce officials, who were on patrol to ensure smooth flow of traffic, spotted a commuter bus parked in the middle of the road and obstructing traffic.

The tasforce officials were said to have accosted the driver but a soldier who was sitting in the bus collected the key from the driver to prevent the taskforce officials from taking the bus away.

The soldier was said to have called for reinforcement from the 81 Division barracks and within minutes, several soldiers trooped out from the barracks and began to haul stones and other dangerous missiles at the taskforce officials.

Some of the soldiers were said to be making unsavoury remarks about the governor for daring to arrest and humiliate an Army Colonel on Tuesday and decided to vent their anger on the taskforce officials.

As the situation worsened, the taskforce also called for a reinforcement.

It was in the heat of the clash that the tyres of the Black Maria were torn with knife and deflated.

An eye witness said a top military officer, a Lieutenant, allegedly ordered his boys to abduct some of the taskforce officials and take them to the barracks.

Calm was restored when a senior taskforce official intervened and asked his boys to beat a retreat.

Taskforce Chairman, Bayo Sulaiman confirmed the attack on his men and described it as an affront on the state government for soldiers to vandalise government vehicle.

He said it was wrong for soldiers to attack taskforce officials on legitimate duty with stones and other dangerous weapons

They should go and sit down, their colonel broke the law, nobody is above the law. I like the humiliation Fashola gave him.  If the governor himself can take the same road with other vehicles, y will the colonel take BRT lane.  Mtcheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

these Soldiers are MAD...they think we are in a military regime or what? They should take over power if they are soooo hungry for power, or if they are tired of sitting in the barracks they should go to Brono state and the Red light zones in the north.

What the HELL are you writing here? How many of them break the law you asked?
I answer you: Millions of them.

Can't you see them collecting bribes on the roads everywhere?
Can't you see them beating unarmed civilians mercilessly?
Haven't you see them arresting other force because they think they have power more than others in the country?
They always violate the law by taking one way lane
Haven't you see them taking motorcyclist popularly known as OKADA without paying them?
They used their uniforms to humiliate civilians without having any human sympathy
Can't you see them use their uniform doing odd jobs like escorting cars that carried contraband goods and collecting money....
They have interest to maltreat someone because he owe another person, in order to have share when the debt is paid...

Don't make me angry to write more about them. In fact Gova... Fasho, please send all of them to where they belong (Barracks) Period!!!

This is the most problem we're facing in the Nigeria. When a uniform man committed a crime he will go FREE. When someone in power, government officials committed atrocities he/she will go FREE without facing a long term in jail. Instead, they will pardon him or her and give him/her another post. Our Senate and House Assembly has became a place to open eyes to grab all the Nairas that pass under their tables. You're making the law but you're breaking the law. Who are we going to use to set examples so that others will emulate...? It cannot be a top military officer, a Lieutenant or even an Army Colonel.... it has to be that wretched palm wine tapper who added sugar in his palm wine and start selling it to others... Nonsense Nigerian Laws!!! Sad
