POLICE in Ekiti State have quizzed the Olomuo of Omuo-Ekiti, Oba Noah Omonigbehin, over the killing a 70-year-old woman, Mrs. Rebecca Adewumi, who was accused of witchcraft.
Our correspendent learnt that the monarch was invited to the Police Command Headquarters in Ado Ekiti on Wednesday and grilled for about two hours.
However, he left immediately after the interrogation.
The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Mr. Victor Babayemi, who confirmed the monarch’s arrest to our correspondent, said the invitation was not an arrest.
Babayemi said, “An autopsy has been carried out on the corpse. It was done on Wednesday but the result is yet to come out. The report will determine our next line of action.”
Adewumi allegedly died on June 30 after being tortured by some youths led by some community leaders in the town.
One of Adewumi’s daughters, Mrs. Grace Smith, had told journalists that her mother, who was accused of being responsible for sickness of an evangelist, Ola, was tortured to death.
She said the alleged that her mother was dragged to the palace of the monarch where she was forced to drink some concoctions believed to have potency to exorcise the alleged witchcraft from her.
Smith said, “My mother was accused of being a witch and she was said to be responsible for Ola’s sickness but they could not substantiate their claims. They dragged us to the palace where we were humiliated.
“At the palace, my mother was stripped naked. The Olomuo of Omuo, some chiefs and residents of the town were present.
“She was forced to drink some concoctions believed to have the power to make her confess her alleged witchcraft. She did not confess nor die after the expiration of the seven days given her but her attackers, who were not satisfied with this, went to her house dragged her inside the rain and flogged her.
“They scrapped her hair with broken bottles and used a giant scissors to cut her fingers. They set her on a tyre and burned her slowly while she was still alive.”
