Defective design and failure to adhere to road construction standards have been identified as some of the problems affecting road construction in the country.

An associate professor, at the Faculty of Civil Engineering, Universiti Technologi, Malaysia, Dr. Johnnie Ben-Edigbe, said this in a lecture he delivered at the Nigerian Building and Road Research Institute, Ota, Ogun State.

Stating that about 85 per cent of roads in the country were defective, he noted that this was responsible for the failed state of most of them.

He explained that the first step in road construction was for the engineer in charge to get the design of whatever he wanted to construct right.

He said, “Most roads in Nigeria failed because the designs were defective. Again, if the soil tests were not done, that could also be a problem. Besides, if the asphalt thickness on the road is thin, between 30-50 milimetres and it is placed on laterite, the combination cannot stay together. Such a road will fail in no time.

“The asphalt thickness ought to be 100mm in thickness. That is the standard requirement.”

Ben-Edigbe told our correspondent that it was baffling that Nigeria was still using a 1990 road design model, which he called the Transport Research Laboratory model.

He said there were other abnormalities on Nigerian roads that also caught his attention.

“It is wrong to have humps on an expressway. I discovered that on some expressways around the country. What should suffice is to put road signs specifying the speed limits on such roads, and let the road safety men enforce such. In a sane environment, you don’t find humps on the expressway. It is not the standard, you don’t slow people down unnecessarily on an expressway,” he stated.

The professor advised President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration to improve the infrastructure across the country and address insecurity to attract investors.
