U.S. President Barack Obama on Tuesday called Ernestina Naadu Mills, the widow of late Ghanaian president John Evans Atta Mills, to express again his condolences over the death of her husband.

"President Obama expressed his admiration for President Mills' tireless efforts on behalf of the Ghanaian people, and his efforts to strengthen the U.S.-Ghana relationship," the White House said in a statement.

Obama also recalled his 2009 trip to Ghana and expressed his appreciation for the hospitality he had received, the White House said.

The statement added: "Mrs. Mills thanked the president for recognizing President Mills' leadership, and expressed her view that the friendship between the United States and Ghana will endure."

Obama had previously offered his condolences in a statement issued right after Mills died of illness on July 24.
