Lithuanian Fan Arrested, Fined At Olympics For Making Racist “Monkey Chants” During Basketball Game

The Olympics is about bringing nations together and setting politics aside. Some fans just can’t get over their bigoted opinion, sadly.
A Lithuanian man was arrested at an Olympic basketball game between Lithuania and Nigeria, which Lithuania won by a score of 72-53. He was held in a cell overnight and then questioned by police about allegedly racist remarks he made during the game. Nearby fans reported that he made “monkey chants” directed at black members of the Nigerian team.
Another fan was reportedly spotted making a Nazi salute. He was quickly convicted of racially aggravated behavior, the first offender at these Olympics to be convicted of the offense, and fined GBP2,500.
According to witnesses, it was a small group of drunken fans that was responsible for the reprehensible jeering. Similar chants were observed during Sunday’s game between Lithuania and Argentina.
The news comes at a time when the nation of Lithuania was celebrating its first Olympic gold, won by 15 year-old swimmer Ruta Meilutyte in the 100m Bosom stroke on Monday.
