Suspected cult members from Enugu State University of Technology on Thursday killed a police officer in a building belonging to the state government at Isuochi Street in Enugu metropolis.

Our correspondent learnt that the policeman was gunned down at the building serving as a Guest House to Enugu State Government before it was converted to a students’ hostel.

A student in the building, who pleaded anonymity, said the policeman was until his death a student of one of the tertiary institutions in the state.

Aside from the police officer, four other persons were killed as the cultists unleashed terror on residents in the state.

Students residing at Princess Amanda Hostel, Independence Layout, told our correspondent that the victims were killed at different locations. They said two were killed in the morning on Adelabu and Peter Okoye streets, Uwani area of Enugu, while one was killed at Onu-Asata in the afternoon.

An eyewitness at Onu-Asata said the gunmen trailed the victim to a joint where he was relaxing and rained bullets at him. According to reports, the victim was hit in the chest.

People in the neighbourhood scampered to safety on hearing the sound of gunshots while the assailants escaped, leaving their target in a pool of his blood. The victim died on the spot before any help could come his way.

The fourth victim, a former councillor in one of the local governments in the state, was killed in the evening on One Day Road, Awkunanaw.

It was learnt that the assailants used cars in place of banned motorcycles for their operations.

Thursday’s killings came on the heels of the manhunt for the abductors of the Vice-Chancellor of Enugu State University of Science and Technology, Prof. Cyprian Onyeji.

The killings brought the death toll to five since two rival confraternities – Vikings and 22s – renewed their hostilities last Saturday.

Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Ebere Amaraizu, confirmed that one Nnamdi Nwokolo was murdered at Onu-Asata while another person was killed at Uwani.

The PPRO, who spoke to our correspondent on the telephone, however said the police had yet to establish any link between the killings and ongoing cult violence in the state.
