The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the South-West has warned Yoruba leaders against any agenda capable of further causing disunity among the people.

The party gave the warning while disowning a conference to be organised by a new group, The Yoruba Assembly in Ibadan, Oyo State, on Thursday, describing it as a direct attack on the Yoruba Unity Forum (YUF), which met less than week ago at the instance of “respected Yoruba leaders” at the Ikenne Country Home of the late sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo.

“Since there was a meeting of the YUF last week Thursday at the instance of Yeye Oodua, Chief HID Awolowo, holding another meeting eight days after is suspicious,” read a statement released on Monday by Hon. Kayode Babade, the zonal publicity secretary of the party.

“Although we have a lot of respect for General Alani Akinrinade (rtd), convener of next Thursday’s meeting, we however hasten to warn that any agenda by shadowy politicians in Yoruba land capable of causing further disunity among the Yoruba people will not be supported by the PDP.”

The statement said PDP’s attention had been drawn to newspaper adverts announcing the meeting and it wished to disclaim any association with the meeting or its organisers.

“Our reason is that the only person whose voice was generally respected as that of the Yoruba nation was the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo,

“It is, therefore, questionable that last week, a meeting of the Yoruba Unity Forum was held in Awolowo's residence in Ikenne with none of the promoters of next Thursday’s meeting in attendance. The Yoruba people spoke so clearly at the Ikenne meeting and nothing must be done to diminish the importance of the decisions taken there.

PDP expressed suspicions over the meeting, considering that some people who shunned the meeting of Yoruba leaders in the home of Awolowo will be organising the said meeting eight days after

“We in the PDP, therefore, wish to dissociate ourselves from the so-called Yoruba Assembly scheduled for Thursday in Ibadan, and we shall continue to be suspicious of such gatherings until those organising them are able to tell the entire Yoruba people why they have not been attending the Yoruba Unity Forum meetings.
