An infant and a suspected bomber died yesterday in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, following two bomb explosions, which rocked the metropolis in the early hours of the day.
The first bomb explosion, which occurred at Green House area around the West End, was reportedly concealed in a wheelbarrow by a suspected Boko Haram bomber and was allegedly targeted at men of the Joint Task Force (JTF) around the Ramat Square.
Daily Sun gathered that the JTF troops had rushed to the area as soon as the blast occurred while sporadic gunshots were heard from the area.
A middle-aged man and relative of the affected woman, who did not want his name in print, said: “They (JTF troops) were shooting immediately the bomb went off and my sister who was around had to run as everybody was running.
“Unfortunately, a stray bullet hit her on her leg and the child she was carrying at her back.
“The child eventually died but my sister is now at the state specialists hospital receiving treatment.”
Hospital sources claimed some corpses with bullet wounds were brought in yesterday afternoon but there was no official confirmation of the claim.
The JTF spokesman, Lt. Col. Sagir Musa, in a statement made available to journalists in Maiduguri yesterday, said the first bomb blast was caused by an Improvised Explosive Device, which was concealed in a wheelbarrow at West End, Ramat Square area.
Sagir said in the statement: “The explosive device was concealed in a wheelbarrow by suspected Boko Haram and it exploded at about 8.35a.m.
“The owner of the wheelbarrow was killed instantly while attempting to escape.
“No casualty was recorded.”
He said the area was immediately cordoned off and swept by the Bomb Disposal Arm of the task force, adding that normalcy had since returned to the area.
He also explained that the second bomb was discovered by the JTF troops in Gwange-Sabonlayi area of the metropolis at about 11.29a.m yesterday.
“Boko Haram insurgents were suspected to have planted the explosive device there. It was recovered and detonated by the Bomb Disposal Arm of the JTF at about 11.40a.m,” Sagir said.
He said no casualty was recorded.
Meanwhile, three people have been killed in Bama, a serene town about 78 kilometers from Maiduguri.
Daily Sun learnt that the gunmen stormed the residences of their targets ‘one after the other’ on Sunday night at about 7.30pm and shot them.
“Their people have already carried their corpses to mortuary in Maiduguri,” a source hinted.
