National Leader and owner of the Action Congress of Nigeria, Bola Tinubu, told reporters in London why he was so pissed off with Ondo state governor, Olusegun Mimiko and why he so desperately wanted him defeated in the governorship election next month. Hear Tinubu: ‘He promised that within 30 days of his declaration, when we were fighting the case in the court, he would join the Action Congress of Nigeria, [ACN] and after being sworn in he started dilly-dallying. That is his trait. He is not principled; a person with character would not do that definitely’.

So anyone who has been wondering at the consuming nature of Aregbesola’s violent op-position to Mimiko and the government of Ondo state will now understand the raison d’être. My interest is not in whether Mimiko made a promise which he did not live up to. Sure it is good and honourable to live up to a promise you made; but in truth how many politicians live up to promises they make? They are men of many words. I know that Tin-ubu himself would have failed to live up to many promises in the course of his political life. Mimiko is in good company in the voca-tion in Nigeria.

The intriguing thing is the bit about a prom-ise made ‘when we were fighting the case in court’. What kind of support did Mimiko re-ceive that could have prompted him make a commitment of switching parties? Would the provision of counsel for him have prompted such a promise? I don’t think so. Mimiko was a man of means himself. He had been Com-missioner, Secretary to State Government and Deputy Governor in Ondo State and a Minister at the federal level at different times. What kind of help would have prompted such a com-mitment if Tinubu is to be believed?

I don’t think either of Tinubu and Mimiko will be able to publicly tell us what the help was. Olusegun Agagu where are you? Can you throw any light on this intriguing matter? Remember that Agagu was the governor that Mimiko challenged and overthrew in court.

Nasty stories of inducement and displacement filled the air at that time, but none of the parties could speak openly. Can any member of the election tribunal that heard the matter help us to understand this help? I guess none will be able to. It’s only a question of time; we will get to know it all. Jesus Christ has told us tha whatever has been whispered in the closets shall be revealed on the rooftops. The word of God is always true.
