Two Chelsea players say they heard race-row referee Mark Clattenburg call Blues’ star John Obi Mikel a “monkey”.
It is understood the pair made the claim to teammates in the dressing room after Sunday’s explosive clash with Manchester United.
Clattenburg vehemently denies making any racist jibe and is confident he will be cleared by match officials, who heard his every word through a microphone headset.
A source said last night: “He said nothing of the sort — and he will fight this all the way”.
Clattenburg, 37, is also accused of calling Chelsea midfielder Juan Mata a “Spanish t***” during the West London side’s 3-2 defeat.
The referee denies making racist comments — and believes his innocence will be proved by the linesmen and fourth match official. They will have heard every word he spoke during the game through the headset all referees wear.
A source said: “There’s always a lot of noise on the pitch and the players could easily have misheard”.
An inquiry was launched into the racism claims by the FA after Chelsea lodged an official complaint. Clattenburg will not be officiating at a match this weekend.
The FA had hoped to bring the row to a swift end after the John Terry racism row dragged on. But the scene was set for another lengthy wrangle yesterday after the Metropolitan Police announced it was also launching an inquiry.
They decided to act after the Society of Black Lawyers made an official complaint.

The Referee is counting on protection from his colleagues, the 4 officials can hear themselves during a match, but they cannot record themselves,if the FA or even FIFA is serious about eradicating racism in the beautiful game, they should get microphones that could conference and inter record at the same time, its a cheap technology. How could two players accuse a referee of such a thing in one match and you are telling me he is innocent.Well Ramirez and one other player heard him say it.I am just watching to see what will be the verdict of the FA,more interesting to me is that of the Metropolitan Police who are now having their own independent investigation

Who told the refs conversations during any live match(es) are not recorded? Why not wait for the real case to be heard b/4 passing judgement.

Chelsea are just bad losers
That's just the plain truth... They won in a similar way back in 2010 when Rooney was unjustly red carded with the game tied at 2 all. Drogba scored a late minute clear offside goal which was allowed to stand and chelsea won... Now it has turned against them and they are shouting blue murder. They are just bad losers who can't take defeat in good faith. And come to think of it no other team in the PL have a long record of racism in their history like chelsea. So why all these noises?

Do you have any problem with English Language?,is it not better you read and understand what someone said before you pick on him?.Where did I say the referees conversation during live matches are not recorded??.Bros,I never said that. What I said is this, the officials of a match could hear themselves during a match, but they cannot record themselves.Recording themselves is a different thing, recording of their conversation is another different thing.Hope you understand. The next thing you will say is that I am a Chelsea fan,but it might interest you to know that I am a Man U fan and will always be.Thanks.
