Dogs these days might be learning to drive, but that doesn’t mean they’re adequate babysitters.
James R. Irvine, 41, was charged with child neglect after Flagler County Sheriff’s Office deputies said the Palm Coast, Fla., man headed to a bar and left his 10-month-old son home with a pit bull to watch over him, WESH reports.
The baby‘s mother, whose name has not been released, told authorities that she was at work Friday night and had left Irvine, her boyfriend, to care for their child, according to NBC Miami.
The woman said she called Irvine multiple times before 11 p.m. He didn’t answer the first few times, but finally picked up to say he was “watching the game” before hanging up on her, according to a sheriff’s report obtained by the Palm Beach Post.
The woman came home to find Irvine urinating on himself while attempting to get in through the garage door. She told officials that Irvine admitted he had been out drinking, but claimed he hadn’t really left their son alone because the “pit bull was watching the baby.”
According to the report, the mother found her child crying alone in a room with the door shut. The dog was reportedly sitting outside.
The woman contacted authorities, and Irvine was arrested at about 12:30 a.m. Saturday.
Common sense is indeed not common.
