At least 1,950 people have been employed by the Lagos State Government into Neighborhood Watch in addition to 2,200 people who are mainly volunteer groups in the new security outfit established by the state government. Commissioner for Rural Development, Prince Lanre Balogun, disclosed this yesterday during the annual ministerial press briefing to commemorate the second year in office of Governor Babatunde Fashola in office.

He said it was difficult to say in specific terms the number of attempts at crime foiled by the outfit, since they do not arrest but mainly serve as informant by reporting suspicious activities to the Force.

He said the Police and other security outfits had attested to the positive influence of Neighbourhood Watch in the quest to control criminal activities in the state.

He said the ministry had been able to provide water supply for 92 communities in the state last year, adding that 80 communities of the number were provided with small scale water scheme.

Balogun said the micro-water works were capable of producing minimum output of 45,000 litres per day. “All the water works are complimented with pipe network of five kilometres each,” he said, adding that the ministry also rehabilitated 10 dysfunctional micro water schemes for concerned communities.

The commissioner added that his ministry provided 68 oil immersed distribution transformers in the rural areas in addition to 50 rural electrification project and 10 solar powered projects installed across the state.
