No fewer than 15 persons, including a soldier were killed in a gun battle between the Joint Task Force (JTF) and suspected Boko Haram elements. The sect lost 14 members. The dead soldier was said to be from the 3 Brigade of the Nigerian Army in Kano.
Scores, among them another soldier, were injured in the clash, which occurred in the Anguwa Uku area of the ancient city. They have been taken to the hospital.
A Golf car bearing explosives was seized when the JTF stormed a building suspected to be the sect’s hideout in Yan-Awaki.
JTF spokesman Captain Ikedichi Iweha said the building was demolished and some dangerous weapons recovered.
The recovered items include 14 AK 47 rifles; four 50-litre drums laden with explosives; 51 other small drums and 10- milk tin sized Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs).
The victims, it was learnt, were blown up by explosives detonated by the militants when the JTF cordoned off the building.
The interception of the Golf car prevented what would have been another disaster in Kano yesterday.
At the time of this report, security operatives were combing the area for fleeing members of the sect. Some adjoining buildings where they are believed to be hiding are under surveillance.
Church services did not hold in Hotoro, Mariri and Badawa for fear of attack.
Before Easter, security had been beefed up, with the JTF and the police deploying their operatives in strategic locations. They also used Armoured Personnel Carriers (APC) to patrol flash points.
Kano is becoming the hotbed of Boko Haram attacks.
On March 18, the sect attacked a motor park in Sabongari, killing no fewer than 35 persons. The casualty figure is, however, believed to be higher.
The sect’s activities are threatening ties between Nigeria and the United States (US) whose Ambassador Terence McCulley was recently summoned by the Foreign Minister Ambassador Olugbenga Ashiru over his comments on Boko Haram.
At the meeting, McCulley was said to have denied making any comment to undermine the Federal Government’s handling of the Boko Haram insurgency.
Last week, the police recovered some Turkey Oil cans stuffed with remote bombs; two cylinders with remote-controlled devices; 14 hand grenades; four rolls of wire conductor and 12 power sources from the sect.
When he visited his Adamawa home state last week, Chairman of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Bamanga Tukur lamented the prevailing security situation.
“Today, there is fear everywhere. Churches are being burnt. Mosques are being attacked. The United Nations building was bombed. Motor parks are being bombed. People cannot go to motor parks again to travel for fear of being attacked. Security installations such as police stations, prisons are being burnt down and inmates released at will. Nobody knows the next target of attack. Nigeria is under attack,” he said.
