AS preparations for the 2015 general election hot up within the camps of political parties, the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has declared that it is aware of the antics of opposition parties towards snatching power and that it is ready to slug it out with any of them.
National Chairman of the PDP, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, who gave this warning in a recent exclusive interview with Sunday Tribune, also declared that despite reports in the media about a strained relationship between him and the governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi, he had no problem with the chairman of the Nigerian Governors Forum (NGF).
He said the party was aware of all the opposition parties were doing to challenge it in the 2015 election, adding, however, that the PDP was prepared to contain them.
“I am now convinced that the opposition groups are preparing war against the PDP as we march towards 2015. We will match them action for action, wit for wit, strength for strength and we will put them where they belong as we have been doing since 1999. We cannot relent and this is the time we should begin to take action,” he said.
Alhaji Tukur added that the party’s top echelon had set in motion a process of reconciling its aggrieved members across all the states of the federation, adding that “it is our responsibility to do that. But all the same, I crave for continued support for the party by our members so that we can begin to take faster steps in our journey to greatness, rather than allow ourselves to be tied down by issues we should have resolved with the snap of fingers.”
Tukur also declared that both chairman, PDP Governors Forum, Chief Godswill Akpabio, and Bayelsa State governor, Seriake Dickson, were crucial to the development of the party in the Niger Delta.
He said, at several forums, Governor Amaechi had assured him of maximum co-operation in his effort to pilot the party to greater heights.
“The chairman of Nigerian Governors Forum, Rotimi Amaechi, had several times assured me of maximum co-operation. He has been to my house and I have visited him in Rivers State,” Tukur said.
