Charles Richard Jennings Jr. reportedly entered the church hand in hand with his wife. As she sat in her pew, he marched up to her dad, pulled out a gun, and fired a shot, sending people diving for cover. Now, everyone is left wondering what could've possibly possessed him to do such a thing.
After firing the shot, 35-year-old Jennings ran from the church with the pastor and a half other dozen brave witnesses running after him. Though the parishioners were obviously terrified, many ran to the aid of the victim, James Evans, using scarves and a shirt to attempt to soak up the blood.
Meanwhile, Jennings stole a truck from a nearby neighbor at gunpoint and led police on a highway chase. Several hours later, he was caught on foot after the truck ran out of gas. Now, authorities are trying figure out what spurred his crime. They believe he may have been drinking or on drugs and that the couple has a history of domestic disputes.
Honestly, I don't think any explanation will ever be enough to make anyone understand why he would commit such a heinous act. But his family can be thankful for experiencing the miracle of all miracles: Evans turned his head a split second before the shot was fired, causing the bullet to go near his ear and out his cheek, missing his brain. Wow! That is one terrifying close call.
While he was in critical condition Monday, doctors say he's expected to live, although he'll need reconstructive surgery and rehab to learn to swallow and speak again. Jennings, for his part, was booked on suspicion of attempted aggravated criminal homicide, as well as aggravated robbery and possession of a firearm by a restricted user. Authorities don't expect to file any charges against Jennings' wife, although her role in the incident is still unclear.
Obviously, there are still so many unanswered questions. Was Jennings wife in on it? How could he stroll in holding her hand one minute and then be shooting her dad the next? The entire thing is almost too bizarre to fathom. I'm just relieved to hear that Jennings was caught and that he will have to pay for his actions—and even moreso that against all the odds, the victim will survive.
