The Federal Government on Thursday announced the approval of payment of the Teachers Salary Scale (TSS) to teachers under its employment. “It must be reiterated that the Federal Government remains committed to paying the teachers in Federal Government Colleges (FGC) an enhanced salary as contained in the Teachers Salary Scale (TSS).

“Arrangements have been concluded to commence payment of the new salary to Federal Government teachers.’’ Tthe Assistant Director, Public Relations, Mr Alphonsus Okorafor, said in the statement that the new salary had already been incorporated into the 2008 Appropriation Act.

Okorafor said the implementation of the TSS was limited to the Federal Government teachers since education was on the concurrent list.

“The Federal Govern-ment’s decision to implement the TSS does not necessarily imply that the states are bound to do the same,” he also said.

He added that the constitution stipulated that basic and secondary education remained primarily the concern of states and local councils, who were the major employers of teachers in the country.

“The leadership of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) is expected to negotiate with the various state governments on the issue,’’ he said.
