Warri Wolves defender Azubuike Egwekwe is due back in the country latest tomorrow morning after his deal with SouthAfrican club Bidvest Wits fell through but contrary to reports that he passed a medical the Super Eagles player was asked by the coach of the club to engage in trial matches because they have not seen enough of him, this FCNaija authoritatively gathered from a very close source to the player.

Egwekwe was an integral part of the Super Eagles team that won bronze in Nigeria’s first major participation in the Championships of African Nations (CHAN) hosted by South Africa.

“Azubuike stayed back in South Africa after the CHAN tournament because of strong interest from South African side Bidvest Wits and we were confident on him signing for the club instead the coach of the team asked that he first play trial matches for the club so that they can check his fitness level and know how well he will fit into the side.

“The club (Bidvest Wits) communicated their intention to Azubuike’s parent club Warri Wolves but it only angered the management of the club who questioned the seriousness of the bid from the South African side. Warri Wolves felt the South African club should have seen enough of the player in CHAN instead of asking for the player to do trials,” the source said in a chat with FCNaija.

Azubuike played in all the games Nigeria featured in at the just concluded CHAN tournament and the powerful defender is in the running to make his first world cup appearance with the Super Eagles of Nigeria when the final list of 23 players will be announced by the manager Stephen Keshi later in the year.
