The surgery was carried out during one of his normal yearly routine medical checks at the hospital following the 1997 heart surgery at the same hospital. Co-ordinator of the Kanu Heart Foundation, Pastor Onyebuchi Abia confirmed the success of the surgery adding that the former Super Eagles captain has since left the intensive care unit, ICU, of the hospital and is recuperating in the hosptal.

“He’ll be back home in a few days time’’, Abia said in a statement. ‘’I spoke with him Sunday afternoon and he confirmed he’s in a stable condition.
Even from his hospital bed, he expressed profound gratitude to President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan for the award bestowed on him during the Centenary Award Ceremony in Abuja.

‘’He also hailed the transformation agenda of the present administration in showing commitment to sports adding that he was humbled  by the award and promised to continue his football ambassadorial work for the benefit of the country’’, Abia quoted  him as saying. The former Arsenal forward assured his teeming fans and supporters of his quick recovery.

The problem if such illnesses in Nigeria is that new babies and their mothers are discharged soon after birth.

There are no meaningful checks done in hospitals in Nigeria on the new born babies. Once the mother and baby are observed to be "fine" thats it - home!

And even when mothers go for ante natal check ups - its the same thing. Once the baby looks "healthy" (that means fat and bouncy) thats it.

There is enough technology in the world now for babies born in Africa to be given good quality care right from the time they enter the world.

Kanu is lucky. He played in a foriegn team and his problem was picked up and Arsene Wenger of Arsenal ensured he had the necessay medical attention. Others have not been to lucky. We hear of young Nigerian men born in Nigeria falling down on football and soccer pitches dead!

Football is a vigorous game that needs 100% fitness. The Nigeria Football Association has to be more vigoruos in carrying out adequate medical tests on ALL future and present sportsmen and sportswomen in Nigeria.
