Dairo David Olusegun studied Agricultural Economics & Extension at the Federal University of Technology, Akure. Upon graduation, he ventured into juice making business. In this brief chat, he explains to Ruth Olurounbi that with a startup capital of N200,000, anyone could do this kind of business.

How did you get into the fruit juice business?
Basically, my decision to start up was informed by the level of ignorance or nonchalant attitude exhibited by people towards their health and nutrition. I did some research and discovered that most of the ailments we have could be prevented if we included fruit and vegetables in our diet. Therefore, I decided to provide easily accessible natural fresh fruit juice.

How long have you been in it?
I started in the year 2012. I have been at it for two years.

Would you say the business is profitable?
Well, for me it’s not just about the profit but the help I’m rendering to the society. Every big thing starts small. On the long run, it is profitable.

So where do you hope to take your business to make it bigger?
I see it getting to the top because I’m not stopping until every individual, household, office and every event demands for this fresh fruit juice.

Are there any hurdles to cross when starting this kind of business?
Yes, there are a whole lot of hurdles. To a large extent, the environment does not really encourage such ideas. It will take a great deal of education and enlightenment to make people see the need and importance of the services being rendered. The issue of electricity cannot be overlooked as it’s a major production factor. Other basic hurdles are inconsistency in demand and fluctuation of fruit prices.

How much really does it cost to start your kind of business?
Well, there is no fixed amount of capital needed. It depends on how big or small you intend to start up, but on a fairly good scale between N200,000 to N400,000.

I understand you have clients in the cooperate world, do you have regular clients?
As at the moment, yes I have regular clients, but it took a while to attain that height. At the initial stage there was so much air of skepticism as people were not too sure of the product I was introducing to them, but over time, they have tasted and tested the product and can now recommend to others.

How many workers do you have?
I have five workers but I get contract staff for events.

Realistically, can one person start this kind of business?
Yes, it’s possible. I started that way. It can be a little challenging but with persistence and consistency the required goal or objectives can be achieved.
